You are definately thinking of Far North pastes that disappeared in the 70's or 80's along with Fern Leaf NZ butter and the Swisskit bar that was way ahead of it's time!
Plenty of fish and meat pastes around still including Sardine and Tomato, Morrisons own brand I like
