I trained as a mature teacher at Bordesley from 1974 to 1977 and many of us went on to do well in the profession - a mixture of maturity and the college's reputation I think. I always felt you could go on to do anything within Birmingham's education system at that time.

Townley family and scouting are my memories of Sheldon and Stanville in the 60's. I have a lovely photo of the mum helpers who used to organise events. Leslie was Akela in the 144th cub scout group. Tony was good friends with my family.

Just typed in Newark croft on the off chance. My family lived there from about 1955 until 1969. I remember some of the family names - Manleys, Ball, Colonel White, Bute, Ashcroft. We loved playing in the croft, climbing the lampposts, playing knock doors and run, listening out for the ice...

My great grandad was the rag and bone man 'Raggy Allen' operating out of Garrison Lane. Billy was the name of his horse, according to mum. They later expanded into metals. A second marriage split the family but my grandma Rose Dagnan (nee Allen) ran the small shop in Bordesley Green Road, next...

That was my grandma's shop until she retired in the 1960s. I often helped out in the holidays and only had a vague memory of a boys school next door. Glad I didn't imagine it! The frozen jubblies were amazing as were the penny ice lols.

The bad feeling may have been that great grandad Allen married the housekeeper after his first wife died meaning the money and business went down a different family route. My grandma Rose Allen married a Dagnan but when widowed ran the shop in Bordesley Green Road until the 1960s.

My grandma Rose Dagnan (nee Allen) took over the shop but retired to Solihull in the 1960s. I have very fond memories of 'helping' in the shop during holidays, ice buns on the counter, bundles of firewood on the shop floor, penny ice lollies and listening for the shop bell from out the back...
