School - Institute Road, Kings Heath

On further pondering, the maintenance man was called Mr. Greenway I think, the confusion being caused by the fact that he always wore green colored work overalls. He was often encountered on the playground and around the outdoor toilets. Probably not a good look these days. The world has changed...

Hello! My teacher there was Miss Pickavance. I never forgot that name... The only other name I remember was a fellow named Mr. Green who was the janitor and maintenance man. He was always very nice to the kids.

Brummies who moved to the USA

You are correct! The "California Dream" is long gone. It was wonderful in the 60's and 70's though.

Brummies who moved to the USA

Currently I live about 10 miles from Oroville the (City of Gold). Sadly, these days Oroville is the punchline to many a bad joke, a kind of remote outpost of poverty, ignorance and desperation. The locals have a strong affinity for meth and to most it is a place to avoid entirely. Oroville was...

Brummies who moved to the USA

Born and raised in Birmingham in the 50's, left with my family for California in 1963. I often have thoughts as to what my life would have been like had we stayed. Still, fond memories of those long ago days.

    Childhood Memories

I certainly remember being frightened as a child when I was going to West Heath School. Despite no internet and less tv, nuclear annihilation was still a hot topic amongst the young students in those days. It was no better after our move to California in '63. We had a weekly drill at school...

    Childhood Memories

That was quite noble of you! But, who were your imaginary enemies during those dangerous days?

    Childhood Memories

I don't know much about rifles or what type they were but they were certainly not toys. It does appear that the farmer who owned the land that later became Hawkesley had given this group consent to build their gathering place on his property, unless of course it was without his knowledge. The...

    Childhood Memories

Yes it is absolutely true. We would see them on pretty much a daily basis until we moved to California in the autumn of 1963. I remember that my parents would talk about them in hushed tones when we asked who they were etc. I suppose they didn't want to alarm us children. I know that they were...

    Green Acres prior to Hawkesley

I have no idea where to post this really but this seems as good a place as any. I also have a question which has puzzled me to this very day. I lived on Green Acres Rd up until 1963 when we immigrated to California. My old neighborhood was the foundation and cornerstone of the abomination now...
