    Fairgrounds

Attached photo shows my wife Pat. And myself with our two children. It must have been taken in the early/mid 60s. It’s not much to go on but can anyone say where this fairground was. The only fairs i used to visit as a kid were the onion fair near the Villa ground and the one in Sutton Park and...

    Service Numbers

The word slash has been mentioned on this thread meaning. /. When I was doing my National Service, 1956/58, this was referred to as oblique. Being a driver in a transport company, when asked for my number, I would say T oblique 23323***, then my name.

    Birmingham's Working Horses

Interesting thread this As a school boy I used to go along Oval Road to get to Ryland Road School. Quite often we would come across a baker delivering his bread, I don’t know how, but one of my school friends discovered that if we whistled while walking along the horses private part grew quiet...

The end - 60 years ago

I’ve just caught up with this thread and find it very interesting. At the time of the last tram runs, not too long out of school, I lived on Gravelly Hill, the number 2 route. I stood at the front of our house and saw the last tram go by, such a sad day. I did have a photo of same, unfortunately...

Don’t know how I missed this thread, only just found it. I am the Ray mentioned, I started there in January 1953, straight from school. Bosses were Harry Bonner and George Richardson, partnership dissolved a couple of years later. The current building was built while I was there. I stayed until...

    Harvo Malt Bread

The mention of Malt loaf takes me back to my being a nipper. Mom used to take me to the Star cinema, bottom end of Slade Road and on the way she would buy me a malt loaf to munch during the film. I still buy them today, lovely with butter.

    Erdington

Just taking a walk down memory lane looking at this Erdington thread On page 5, half way down there is a lovely photo of Woolworths on the high Street Barnabus Road junction. When my wife Pat and I married in 1960, one of the first things we bought was a wooden ironing board from this Woolies...
