    Birmingham history videos and clips

I'm sure this is on other threads, but the MACE Archive (MACE = Media Archive for Central England) is an amazing resource for old TV footage, and it has lots of stuff on Birmingham. Not all footage is loaded up yet, but the records are there to follow up with MACE. Nevertheless there are some...

    fish and chip shops

Best chips I ever had after a night on the town were from "City Fish Bar" near the Arcadian - it was one of the units that was taken on to become the National Trust's Back-To-Backs. I had mixed feelings - great restoration of heritage, but what about my chips?! City Fish Bar was nothing to look...

Hi Tora. As far as I know Terry Slater is still going - he is on LinkedIn. I'll try to look into your query too.

Rivers : Forgotten Streams or Brooks of Birmingham

I believe one of the sites for Chad Valley Toys was right next to Harborne Station in Station Road - somewhere on the internet there are photos of all the materials sitting very close to the platforms. It mentions the Harborne site in this article...

    Hagley Road

According to Martin Hampson's book "Images of England: Edgbaston", (3 photos - 1 of outside, 2 of interior - pp124/125), it was indeed on corner of Francis Road and Hagley Road. Opened in 1884. Says from 1937 they were used for the Warwickshire Masonic Temple too. It says the building was...

    Granville Street Ladywood

Hi Rod, Granville Street had the original 'most central' Midland Railway station for the Birmingham West Suburban Railway (now cross city line): https://www.warwickshirerailways.com/lms/granville_st.htm The goods depot was actually a bit further in, around Holliday Street via a tunnel from the...

    'South Bank' on Harborne Road

Photo of Colonel Joseph Clive Piggott MC (centre of photo in army uniform): https://shop.memorylane.co.uk/mirror/1400to1499-01472/king-haakon-norway-inspects-guard-honour-8th-21908674.html. Was in Birmingham Home Guard during WWII and was formerly of Coldstream Guards. Apparently he died in 1975...

    Granville Street Ladywood

Hi Penns. Been doing some research on Osler - there is a Directory saying that in 1854 Osler's factory was at 164-165 Broad Street, which is around where the 'The Exchange' (opposite new library) is today. Kelly's Directory of 1892 says that the factory has moved further out to 230 Broad Street...

    'South Bank' on Harborne Road

No - I think you're right - they look like drain covers as they are dotted around on the side of the roads. pjmburns - I looked on StreetView too and unless its covered by the ivy, I have a horrible feeling it might have been knocked down too. Could wait until winter(!)

    'South Bank' on Harborne Road

Hi Lyn. On the map, near post 3 there is some kind of double box rectangle shape - I can't work out what it is, as the map blurs when I zoom in - I don't suppose anyone knows what that is? Is it a 'map symbol' or some kind of construction or something? Seems very small. Unless it is the actual...

    'South Bank' on Harborne Road

Ah - I see what you mean - so sometime between 1937 and 1954 it was potentially demolished. Ok.
