When was the last WW2 Air Raid Siren sounded in Brum?

I seem to remember that sirens were occasionally tested locally in the 60s & 70s, to make sure they were still operational. I'm thinking at the town hall, in police/fire stations and in some larger factories/offices until the Cold War cooled down. I'm sure I have heard and seen them, I think I...

Fred Hanks Motorcycles - Slade Road

You may already be aware Andy, but the following is available on YouTube, entitled "A visit to Fred Hanks Motorcycle Ltd" posted by Ras Negus. It shows both the inside and outside of the shop in Slade Road and is 8.27 minutes in duration.

    Parkes Harry

There are some more posts about Harry Parkes on the "Aston Villa History" thread (posts #150 - #155 apply). Harry's parents living in Abbey Road (as mentioned in post #8 above) would have tied in with his attending Slade Road school too and this is also mentioned on that thread.

    Give us yer donny

Funny enough I used "potty mouth" myself this week, I must have delved deep into my memory banks to find that, my Nan used to use it, as she certainly did "show me your donnies". Nice memories those.

    Albany Hotel

I think it's Cleveland Tower on the right Viv. I always thought those two huge residential towers, looked out of place on Holloway Head. Nice to see the Odeon open for business.

    City Centre pubs

Sad news about The Post Office Vaults, we used to drop in occasionally for a quiet drink, as we had done previously when it was The Royal Mail. Hopefully, as poker-pete82 has suggested above it will re-open at some point. Some photos of it below:

    RIP OZZY OSBOURNE

Here's some extracts from Geezer Butler's Ozzy tribute in the Sunday Times (he donated his fee for this, to Birmingham Children's Hospital): The rehearsals for that final show started a month before at a studio in the Oxfordshire countryside. Tony Iommi, Bill Ward and I ran through seven songs...

    RIP OZZY OSBOURNE

I heard on local TV tonight that Ozzy's "Working Class Hero" exhibition at the Museum & Art Gallery, will now remain open until 18th January next year, due to the high visitor levels. That's great news.

The end - 60 years ago

My Mom was a clippie on the last day of service on the 78 tram. For anyone who hasn't had the pleasure of riding on a tram, or who wants to jog their memories and in case you didn't know, they still run regularly at the Black Country Living Museum:

Why the hurry to move those floral tributes? :(

Erdington Boys School Slade Road School

Your grandfather used to give me stickers, when I occasionally called in to ask if he had any to spare on the way to Slade Road school (my father had a fruit shop further up the Slade, so I used to walk past it on a daily basis in the 60s). I recall him being friendly and tolerant, with a young...
