    heatwaves 2026

Yes, we didn't have the "Nanny State" warning us that it was too cold, too hot or too something else either, Lyn. Our parents and grandparents just got on with it, my Dad would just roll his shirt sleeves up and go about his day as normal, with perhaps the help of a block of ice cream and some...

    Rackhams Store

It all went to pot when Sports Direct took it under their wing. Rackhams, John Lewis, Debenhams, what next Selfridges? Yes, you can shop online, but I would like a choice. I don't want to shop on an APP, (despite the number of times they ask me to)....Another closed shop just adds to the...

    Who do you tip?

I'm the same as you with my tipping. I still tip the dustmen (I come under Walsall), they collect all gifts together and they're distributed among them at Christmas. Same with the postman and the barber (although he doesn't need to do much these days;)). I feel if anyone goes the extra bit for...

    OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

It was indeed Lyn. I had a habit of rolling my chair back and I sat at a desk that was about six feet from the windows. I didn't stand to near to the windows or look down at the car park too much, I have never been one for heights.

    Great Western Arcade

That looks quite recent to me. Although, I spend a lot more time looking down to try to avoid tripping these days, rather than looking up to appreciate changes above ground level. :(

    OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

The back of Cumberland House, photographed from Tennant Street, I worked on the 15th & 16th Floor in the early 90s, it seemed a very long way down...

    Coventry Airport closure

Pity, I used it several times 25 years or so ago. It was no nonsense in and out, within an hour, my personal record was 10 minutes from coming off the plane to being in my car on the way out of the airport gate (without any baggage to re-claim, I should add). None of this, be there 3-hours prior...

    Soho Road Handsworth

Pity "The Candy Store" isn't. Nice to see those two ladies at Jennings, looking at the camera from above too.

    The Gunmakers Arms, Bath Street

He sounded so positive six months ago, it seems that didn't last too long though. Sad to see it closed again, but pubs are not well supported by the local residents and the government seem content to ignore the publicans plight. I guess there just wasn't enough willing customers to support two...

The buildings may not have changed too much, but what about what the people are wearing @ #278?

    Parade in Broad Street

Could it be a poster for the MGM Film "Anchors Aweigh?

    Birmingham in 1960s

I've even seen them going to pick up their children from school in the afternoon wearing PJs and slippers Lyn. Wouldn't have happened even in the early 90s, when we waited in the school yard to collect our lad from primary school. That was more like a fashion parade, as I remember gold shoes...
