Thanks for all your help on this ongoing mystery. So far the evidence seems to be pointing to my Nellie being the one below, so I have ordered the birth certificate. I'm keeping my fingers crossed: SOUTHALL, ELLEN MAYCOX GRO Reference: 1888 J Quarter in STOURBRIDGE Volume 06C Page 174

My apologies Lyn, I should have typed that I had her Death Cert and not birth cert.

Thanks pjmburns, and sorry I have only just seen your reply. I agreed that the marriage cert shows John Southall as Nellie May's father & a Labourer. However, the Ellen at Old Swinford is definitely not my Nellie May. The records for Ellen do not match the information I have verified for...

Hi Everyone, I'm revisiting a brick wall now that I have the 1921 census and a birth certificate - and was wondering if anyone could help me. I'm looking for the parents of Nellie May Southall (married 1911 and became Hall) DOB: 4 Feb 1889 Langley Green/Oldbury, Worcestershire, England Died...

I've got the name John as Nellie's father from her marriage certificate. However, I have no other information to confirm if this is correct - but then no other information to say it's not. Nellie married a policeman from a well to do family - I may be wrong in amusing Nellie's husband would...

Thank you. I didn't know that about Handsworth so thanks. I'm leaning towards illegitimacy as I can't find a record for John Southall (other than Stourbridge which is not my Nellie) . Dead end then though :(

Thank you. I'm not sure if this is my Nellie as her marriage cert lists John Southall as her father. I am aware mistakes can be made but I'm guessing this wouldn't be a mistake?

I've picked up the date of birth as 4 Feb 1189 from the 1939 register but don't have a place of birth. John is picked up from her marriage certificate.

Thank you. I've looked in the the Stourbridge Nellie and she is not mine. I can't remember if I've looked into the West Brom Nellie, so will definitely research - thank you for the lead.

Question for those more experienced than me... I have a question about illegitimacy and society norms regarding where people would live and work. I am researching Nellie May Southall DOB 04.02.1889. Lived in Birmingham, father on her marriage certificate being John Southall. No other...

I've checked my G grandad's police record and it shows the same information for my G grandmother as the marriage certificate. It says he lived at 31 All Saints Road, Handsworth at the time he joined the force in 1903 (married in June 1911) but I can't find anything for that address for check...

Gosh William! That must make tracing ancestors very difficult. Amazing that you were able to uncover all this. My G grandfather was a policeman when he married my G grandmother, so I might try there. Thanks Helen
