I remember Marie Dodd - she was exceptional at sport and was in the year above me if I recall correctly. There was another woman who was about 5 years or more older than me - at the time when the 6th form still had the striped blazers. One day I will remember her name!
I think it was Miss...
Sister Ingrid did leave the order, as did Sr. Collette and one other I think - maybe Sr. Sebastian? She became Sonia Swan(n?) when the school joined with the other schools to become a comprehensive school. Mr. Loughran became headmaster then - around 1976 I think.
I'm afraid I don't remember...
It is amazing how much there is on this site. I will try and send you a private message. If I ever get round to looking into my family tree properly it would be lovely to have the connection. The world seems smaller :)
I think I need to read through this thread again and pay more attention. I have now discovered that my great (3x I think!) Grandad (John Marklew) was the uncle of Edward Oxford who attempted to shoot Queen Victoria. So there may be a few tentative connections with people on here!
Not that I know of. We lived in Flaxley Rd. Perhaps there were Marklew's all over the place ha ha!
Hill House Lane was the lane with the bridge across from Flaxley Rd to Manor Road wasn't it? I remember there was a Keatings family and a Bannister family that lived on the Flaxley side of it -...
I've got strong memories of the old wooden church and remember the new one being built. I'm guessing that was built around 1970.
My sister was married there in 1965 I think it was. I almost remember the smell in there and the benches with the slightly soft finish to them, the baptism font at...
There could well be more Marklew's - I seem to have come across a few on here! He was the last one at the back on the far right. Two to his right was Steve Rhodes - I recognise him, though haven't seen him in over 40 years, so that was a surprise! He was born September 1954
I think my brother would have been at CGS about 65 - 71, Robert Marklew. I can see him in the 1970 picture, thank you @pjmburns. I think we had a copy of the photo. He died in 1983.
@Malcolm Robinson - I wasn't sure if your Malcolm Marklew might have been mistaken for my brother, or perhaps...
Just to resurrect an old thread. I have found this one fascinating and I confess it has made me chuckle to read of some of the misdemeanours. I'm not sure if that reflects badly on me - I am a Marklew! I suspect there was much hardship and no social support that drove people to crime.
I know...
Hi @marklew
My grandfather was a Walter Marklew and he served on horseback in WW1. Which was your granddad? I was wondering if it could be the brother of my granddad perhaps? I need to ask my siblings more details.
