    Back to backs in Ladywood

It looks like it could have been taken in Balsall Heath and not Ladywood. Birmingham Post started a search to identify the girl. There is more information here https://www.holdthefrontpage.co.uk/2016/news/ballerina-girl-photographer-shares-delight-at-dailys-search-for-subject/ and here...

Yes Balsall Heath was mentioned so after reading your comment I did a bit of Googling and found an earlier link to Birmingham Post page which states that they think the photo was taken in Varna Road, Balsall Heath. What should I do, should I delete my post? I recall hearing about Varna Road...

    Back to backs in Ladywood

My wife sent me a link to a post in The British Institute of IELTS & Overseas Education Facebook page where someone has posted a photo of a young ballerina Lorraine Williams, photographed in what looks like a drying yard somewhere in Ladywood taken in 1968, although that date seems a bit late...

Remarkable maps, so Crown Street / Nelson Street became Sheepcote Street and Nelson Street probably got reallocated north of it's original location when they built the back to backs.

I attach a map 1840-1890 showing Sheepcote Street marked with a red dot, Nelson Street yellow and Sheepcote Lane blue. I don't recall a Mill Street but here is a link to the map I am referring to if it is of any help...

Yes that's better, as you say still not great but I can make out more of the text.

Yes Lyn but the text is blurred, I even copied and pasted into my graphics program and enlarged further but it is still blurred

Good scanned newspaper clippings, it is a pity they aren't higher resolution because it is difficult to read the text. Edited to add that from what I can make out in the photo with all the cats, the cats are all strays that belonged to people that had left the area; I have a copy of that photo...

Coincidentally, my Gt Aunt Mirry worked in munitions at Joseph Lucas where she received a clock after 25 years of service. I don't know the name of the road but it was in Sparkhill. I attach a photo circa 1945-50 around about the time she worked there plus photos of her retirement presentation...

I found Nelson Street 1937 listed as Summerhill, before I was born but the factory is shown at the back of our house ... really spooky to see it all from the air!

    Back to backs in Ladywood

Unless I have overlooked something, there don't appear to be any aerial photos of Nelson Street circa 1940-50. Here is the image I am presented with, I assume the aerial images available are indicated by the red, purple or green layer icons but there aren't any in the area I am interested in...

    Back to backs in Ladywood

Remarkable photos, I will take a look to see if I can find any of Nelson Street. The houses are certainly at a high density per acre but when they demolished them all and replaced them with high rise tower blocks they probably achieved the same density but ripped out the social heart of the...

Thanks, you are correct, Ralph was Grandfather's brother they served together in 7th Queens Own Hussars fighting the Turks in Mesop, his other brother Fred was MIA 14/7/16 Memetz Wood, Somme. Ralph and Bess had 3 children, Ron and Billy, both now deceased and Alice who I used to be in touch...

Wonderful, many thanks. It is remarkable how the map triggers certain memories. By the corner of Barker Street was a lamp post we used to climb on and that Tool Works used to press metal disks from sheets of metal, lots of which got scattered on the street and pavement and we collected them...

I assume you don't have the section of map south of the one you posted which is a pity. However, a bit more research has been interesting, having discovered maps for 1887 and 1914. It would appear that in 1887 my house was indeed back to back with 8 smaller houses to the NW in what was named...
