Birmingham Central Library Ratcliff Place 1882 - 1974

Creates employment I suppose. The City Centre seems to be one huge building site and road works and I can't believe how long it is taking to redevelop Digbeth. By the time it's done it will be ready to start again.

Birmingham Central Library Ratcliff Place 1882 - 1974

I don't know but it was sad to see it go. It could have had a clean up as has been done with some other old buildings such as the former Spring Hill library and they look so much better than anything built later around them. I was also sad to see its successor go as I thought its tiered design...

I remember the old library well. I was a member and aged about 15 I used to cycle there from West Bromwich to peruse the wonderful selection of books they had and borrow a few. I can recall leaning my bike against the wall outside - no need to lock it up in those days.

    Steve Winwood MBE

Only just Found this thread. A GEC work colleague of mine in the sixties lived next door to the Winwoods in Atlantic Road and knew both Steve and Muff. His name was Dave Turner and was about the same age as them so probably grew up with them . I went to Dave's house (it must have been number...

    GEC WITTON WORKS

Very belated response I'm afraid. I left Witton in 1967 and had various jobs in the UK electrical industry. Ironically, by 1989 I was working for Honeywell Control Systems Ltd, part of which which entailed making regular visits to what was variously called GEC Measurements, GEC Alsthom (I'm...

    GEC WITTON WORKS

I don't think I drank tea myself at the time, being at that awkward teen picky stage. Therefore I was totally oblivious to this strange brown stuff that the draffies drank with such seemingly good humour. I was at a stage when I drank very sweet black coffee from a thermos flask. I can remember...

    GEC WITTON WORKS

Wonderful photo of the tea lady, I don't recognise anyone or the specific location. It brings back memories of the tea lady that used to come round Switchgear drawing office with a tea urn. Everyone gathered around to fill their mugs. It was tea or nothing, of course. When I first started as...

    GEC WITTON WORKS

Great photos Linda. The middle one must be early sixties judging by the cars. Right hand one definitely has a fifties look to it but the left hand one also has a sixties look. The chap at the front left with the 'tache looks very familiar to me but then chap second from the right looks like...

    HB SALE building on fire

As promised, here's the photos I took in 1976. They were taken from the gardens in St Chad's Circus. I took them because of all the redevelopment going on in the City centre (nothing changes!) , I wanted to capture this imposing building before the bulldozers got there. Surprisingly though...

Hi, my profile details (e.g. Real Brummie kid etc.) aren't strictly accurate. How do I edit them please?

    HB SALE building on fire

I worked about 100 yds from there in the seventies, in Bond Street. I have a b&w photo I took of the building which I will post when I find it!

    GEC WITTON WORKS

As a Switchgear Drawing Office Apprentice 1960-65, I too, remember the Foundry School very well. I would have been in there 1962/3 ish. We weren't allowed to keep any of the aluminium castings that we made as they were simply melted down again for the next session. It was an eyeopener for me...
