Dr Crombie was our family doctor when I was born back in 1952. There was also Dr Green and an older doctor called Dr Gathergood, if I remember correctly.
From my recollection of those days you just turned up at the doctors if you were ill without making an appointment and and just joined the...
Used to walk past the Beech Tree and the Warley Odeon every morning on the way to and from school on the Wolverhampton Road in the late 1950s early 1960s and used to go to the Warley Odeon on Saturday mornings along with hundreds of other youngsters. (We come along on a Saturday morning... etc...
Still got my wage slip from the summer sales week in 1969.
Dated 12th July 69 for £6.10s.0d less tax 2s.0d less National Insurance 10s.8d leaving nett pay £5.17s.4d.
Just spotted this entry.
I started work straight from School at Rabone Petersen who were then in Exeter Street right opposite the Odd Spot Club. This was back in 1969.
Us young lads were often entertained by the comings and goings outside the Odd Spot Club. Never got to go in, though. Too young...
I worked at Rackams in town during the summer sales week in July 1969 in between leaving school and starting full time work. Mainly cash transactions if I remember correctly but if someone did want to pay by cheque you had to go and find a manager to get their approval as I don't think the banks...
Just seen these latest entries. Used to get email notifications when there were any additions to this thread but I can't find having done so recently.
Fred Perry was my boss when I started Rabones in 1969 (Holloway Head days). I then moved on within the company and Frank Morrison was my boss...
I started in 1963 but left in 1969 so am not on the list although I recognise many of the names shown. After starting in 1A I sank without trace into the C steam and left after one year spent in 6G along with Harry Flashman among others.
Really sorry to hear about Rudolph Smith. I was in 1A with him back in 1963 and remember him as a happy person. Always smiling. In a later year I remember facing him at cricket for the Britons against the Saxons and having to get out of the way of a particularly fierce delivery which lifted off...
I didn't go on that outing. I can't remember why. not. Probably going through an antisocial phase. Nothing much changes. I could name quite a few, though, and am still in touch with a couple of them. There are at least 3 Perry's on there (4 if you count an ex wife). Fred Perry was my first boss...
It was Italy that finally brought the company down. This would have been early 1982 I believe. By that time the business with South Africa was fairly limited.
Some arrangement was made whereby Rabone Petersen Merchants carried on for a few years from premises in Cradley Heath but that business...
I've just realised I did not respond to or even acknowledge the above post of over 12 months ago for which I apologise. Many thanks for the background information on Ray Wainwright who was head boy when I started in 1963. I only remember him from school assemblies and was struck by how confident...
What a great photograph. Very natural with no posing. I wasn't sure if it was me in the background and sent a copy of the photograph to my brother to see if he could pick me out and he does confirm that the chap grinning in the background is definitely me (John Dale) so well done to Harry...
Hello, Geoff, and good morning to you. I hope you got my further email in response to your above post. It really is good to hear from you after all these years.
Just looking back at the July posts from yourself and Bernard I remember Gabriel Kavanagh and I also remember the incident involving...
