Charles William Page Motor Driver Army Service Corps

Phil B

Made in Brum
Please can anyone help in finding details of my grandfather, Charles William Page?
All I know is, in 1917, according to my mother’s birth certificate, he was a “Private in the Army Service Corps as a Motor Driver” and he was from the Birmingham area, possibly Aston. On my mother’s marriage certificate, in 1937, he was listed as William Page (deceased).
Any help gratefully received.

Hi Phil
Just had a look on freebmd found a birth record for William Charles Page born in Aston June 1893
6d 285.
I have had a look for a death before 1937 but I could not find any record to tie in with birth I have found, do you know if he died in Birmingham ?

Hi Cath
I'm sorry but I don't know if he died in Birmingham or even if died in the country. I know very little about him.
Phil

On the 1925 absent voters list there is a Charles William Page at 268 Stratford Road 534243 Tpr 13/18 Hussars.

In the 1925 electoral registers at 13 Alfred place, Osler street Charles William Page was living with Charles Andrew Page and Annie Maria Page and Catherine Page. In the 1918 absent voters list he was at the same address Page, Charles William 13 Alfred Place EMT/43886 Dvr., R.A.S.C.

Thanks to all.
My conclusion is Charles didn't marry my grandmother Gertrude but went on to marry Catherine and they lived at 13 Alfred place, Osler street.
So he was probably alive in 1937 when my Mother got married, as there is no record of his death prior to this date.
Once again thanks to Cath, Bewdley and John.

On the assumption that Charles served overseas at any time during the Great War there are three "possibles" from the medal rolls. All were drivers with the Mechanical Transport ASC. They were numbered: M/337895, M2/151780 and M/279643. The last one re-enlisted in 1919 and became EMT/43886. Hope that helps. Good luck!

Hi Chris,
I have 3 different numbers for Charles when he was on the absent voters list for the years 1918 to 1921 when registered at 13 Alfred Place, Osler Street, Birmingahm and they are...

From absent voters list...
1918 - 13 Alfred Place, Osler Street, Rotton Park Ward. M/279643, MT, ASC 1st Bn.
1919 - 13 Alfred Place, Osler Street, Rotton Park Ward. M/279643, M.T A.S.C.,
1920 - 13 Alfred Place, Osler Street, Ladywood - 497357 Bin., 2/13 Lon. Regt.
1921 - 13 Alfred Place, Osler Street - M/18795 L/Cpl., R.A.S.C
I also have his wedding certificate for 1920 when he married Katherine Schiley in Cologne, Germany.

You have now given me a 4th service number (EMT/43886) can you shed any more light on this please, ideally do you have access to his service record?
Phil

Yes thanks Linda. It's always nice to get confirmation. Thanks for looking.
Cheers

Hello Phil. The number prefixed EMT is from his campaign medal index card. It implies re-enlistment in 1919 and by the look of the absent voter details you have he was still serving in 1921. That opens up a possibility that his service record is still held by the Ministry of Defence. You can apply for a copy - it costs £30 and they are currently quoting a year delivery!

Hello Jonathan, since posting my enquiry I've found a lot of information about my Grandfather but I couldn't find his service record. I applied for his records at the "Historical Disclosures" in Glasgow without any luck they told me they must have been destroyed in WWII. It would be great if this medal is his. Can you please tell me the service number(s) on the edge of the medal?

Phil

I thought I was so close. I feel bad having this metal. Hard to say when it was put to the open market but I'm sure someone in his family would like to have it. Just to make sure we can double check there was another PTE C Page in the A.S.C. maybe the issuing office messed up the number as it was for a whole group.

Hi Jonathan, there were a number of Pte. C. Page in the A.S.C. The quote here from Chris shows at least three. Your medal is for the first one he mentions.
My Grandfather's numbers are M/279643 and EMT/43886.

Phil
