  • HI folks the server that hosts the site completely died including the Hdd's and backups.
    Luckily i create an offsite backup once a week! this has now been restored so we have lost a few days posts.
    im still fixing things at the moment so bear with me and im still working on all images 90% are fine the others im working on now
    we are now using a backup solution

Windows 10

Microsoft are rebuilding their Edge browser to run on Chromium, the same open-source web rendering engine that powers Google’s Chrome browser. I'm trying it and it copied all my Chrome settings and bookmarks and looks just like Chrome. OK so far and it is very fast and can use Chrome extensions.

I've been running a development version of Microsoft's chromium plated Edge since Monday and gave them some feedback with a screenshot yesterday. Today I received the Microsoft email shown below.

it seems o.k Mohawk the only thing that I can see that needs tweeking is that you cannot get a new tab to open with the page that you want at the moment

I usually click with the mouse wheel/button to put up a new tab and then click the tab. If it wasn't for the 3 dots (Settings) top right being horizontal instead of vertical as in Chrome I can hardly tell which browser I'm running. I still have Old Edge on the taskbar. There is an ABP (beta) extension for Edge Dev in the Microsoft Store and I have that as can be seen below.

I've been using Edge Dev for a week now without any problems and Microsoft have just popped the weekly update into my laptop.

Just updated to Version 1903 OS build 18362.116. It has some visible changes but most are system changes for improved performance and security. Automatic troubleshooting now available. All apps running perfectly.
Edge Dev still running with no problems and it is updated weekly.
 
Available updates for Win 10 (1903) are now signaled with an icon showing on the taskbar. They can also now be paused for 7 days on a rolling weekly basis for up to 35 days.

I had a problem yesterday with my office programme 'Ability v8.03' it wouldn't open, spreadsheets wouldn't open and sometimes just partly opened in one corner of the screen.
Went into control panel-programs, highlighted Ability, chose 'repair' , Windows ran the install and all's back to normal, nothing lost.
 
Still trying to sort out why I can't get Defender to turn on. Don't have any other anti virus software which would prevent it from turning on just states that virus and threat protection managed by your organisation. I've gone in as administrator and tried to turn it on by following microft instructions but still no joy. This is with W10 pro incidentally which was an on line upgrade from W8.
 
I haven't had Windows now for over two years - except those I look out of :laughing: - but from memory I thought Defender was turned on by default, hence the message 'managed by your organisation'?

I mentioned that I could not format the old style compact memory card. Today I borrowed a multi card reader but needed a new driver. Google search only found one of those websites which offer 'Driver Doctors' etc. I only looked at the website but decided not to proceed and certainly not download anything.

Later today I happened to look at the Win 10 Reliability Monitor and noticed a critical failure even though laptop was running perfectly. Decided to do a scan with Malwarebytes and it found and quarantined two PUPs.

Since done a CCleaner scan in registry etc and items deleted.
 
The old quick and easy Windows Photo Viewer was ideal for quickly browsing through a folder full of photos and it still works and can be made the default viewer even with the latest Windows 10 version 1903.

I was going to put some bedding plants in today but heavy rain so playing with my laptop and Windows 10 predictive text has learnt my forum user name. I typed ol and it offered 3 choices.
I also changed the pointer colour to purple ... still thinking about that !

Still raining so still playing with my laptop ... trying the Win 10 translator ... English to German ... looks quite accurate unless someone knows better ... :)

On this chilly rainy June morning I was typing a comment in the Old Street pics thread and screen suddenly went blue and laptop shut down. Restarted and the Old Street pics thread was still on with the half typed word when it shut down.
Finished the comment and then ran good old sfc /scannow and corrupt Windows files were repaired.

Going to run DISM later and investigate.
edit comment... I use a wireless mouse with my laptop and normally have the touchpad disabled. Somehow it became enabled and the above problem occurs if my wrist touches the laptop when typing.

This has just popped up, for real or a scam? For better or for worse I went for the close down option. Was this wise?
 
The line in the address bar suggests it is a scam do not click that ok button. I would first run a scan using Windows Defender and if you have Malwarebytes free I would run a scan with that. If you have not got Malwarebytes I would download and install it. It usually downloads a 15 day trial which runs the full version but if you don't take up the offer the free version works just as well except you have to manually scan about once a week.
 
I use Malwarebytes free but every so often they send the 15 day trial and the pic below shows I have 10 days left. Also have a look at post #970 and #416

I have the paid for version, but it is the most unobtrusive and thorough anti-virus that I have ever used. In my second year now and I don't regret paying for it. Doesn't gobble CPU power either like many of them do.

I been using Microsoft's 'Edge Dev' as an alternative browser since April. It uses the chromium open source browser engine and now it runs as good as Chrome for me on all websites. MSoft sent me a notification this morning about a problem I fed back to them in June and they have now solved it.

Edge Dev now has dark mode and they have just added anti-tracking.

Phil, thanks for the response, I did a virus scan as you suggested, nothing found.

No it is just the colour of the open tab, the address bar, the favourites bar, and a drop down list of favourites. The performance of Edge Dev is now a good as Chrome because is uses the same browser engine. Anyone with updated Windows 10 can download it and I would think that Microsoft will soon be replacing the 'old' Edge perhaps in the next but one upgrade.
 
Having used computers since the days 'when we only had zeroes' I just don't 'get' Windows 10. Ninety-five percent of its desktop from 'out of the box' is adverts. To find an 'app' we are back to 'DOS days', a 'search' on a text entry being the quickest and only way to find some stuff. File Explorer is useless and slow, 'working on it' for minutes to find the only two files in a folder, bring back 'DIR'! My Win 10 laptop 'forgets' that it had ever been connected to a printer, even if marked 'default'.

I live in hope that someone will create an up-to-date version of XP or at least realise that we don't want to update our old programs (there might not be a new version) or hardware, like cameras, scanners etc.

I seem to be running 17134 and it will stay that way as long as possible since a previous 'update' required a complete re-install of Win 10, wiping out all data too. In my time I have re-installed many versions of Windows but never had one that wiped out user data, (even though Microsoft warned that it could happen).

I think 'computing' is going backwards, the old 4:3 monitor format suddenly went 'wide screen', (so people could watch video?). That screwed up web page design. Next, apparently, we are 'all' doing touch screen 'apps' on micro 'portrait' screens! The universality of the HTML web page destroyed at a stroke, not that HTML is really running things anymore. (Why do we need these 'smart phone' apps anyway? I can't see why they can't run under the browser anyway, especially as the browser has virtually become the 'operating system', or the user interface if nothing else).
 
I read this thread purely out of interest and I love all the 'gobbledygook' as far as I am concerned as you learned technophobes discuss, query, solve and eradicate problems with computers. I have a networked works computer, a notebook, a laptop and an ipad (now only used for freecell) and a Samsung Android used for EBay, Amazon and BHF. I no longer get interesting? emails on the works computer or the Samsung, the laptop works on Windows 10 and apart from my family tree, I cannot raise any other programme and I only use it for recording my postcard collection, family tree and a route for scanning and storing scans. The notebook is only used for the transfer of postcard scans to be taken to postcard fairs as a reference system and is an older Windows system. I would like to get the postcard scans on the tablet, got the pictures on the ipad, but not the titles, so still have to use the scan to laptop, copy to memory stick, memory stick to notepad and works computer and the record is there. My printer an all singing all dancing HP that does not print or copy any more so all problems I have are solved at a cost (quite high) by local experts. However I do enjoy your abilities and skills and knowledge. But I have now worked out why computers will never take over the world. They can answer almost any question via the search engines, they can ask preprogrammed questions....do you want to close without saving...but they cannot ask a question, so when you boot (where did that word come from) up, you get welcome owner, but never 'how are we today?, did you sleep well? or more importantly can I make you a coffee? Isaac Azimov you were wrong.
