When i was a lad my Dad used to tell me about someone who used to go

to his school, and as he used to say wasn't the brighest button around.

Apparently he was called William Hill and went on to found one of the

countrys leading bookmaking firms.

Can anyone confirm whether or not Billy Hill was a Brummie?

What an interesting account of William Hill's life! I'm not a betting person myself, but what comes through in that biography is his remarkable fairness, and his open dealing. A true sportsman.

What an interesting account of his life, i thought he was a local and went

to Oldknow Road school with my Father, who was also born in 1903.

My Father lived on Oldknow Road, and his Father was a bookmaker of

sorts and also worked at the BSA, so they must have met at sometime.

Wiliiam Hill was clearly a man who was going to succeed and couldn't

have been as 'thick' as others may have thought at the time.

Just goes to prove again what a small world we really do live in...

I enjoyed that Len having been a racing fan for years. Not so much now I may add.

I had a real treat this year, my partner arranged for us both to go and

see the Oaks and Derby at Epsom.

They were memorable days and i felt some of the history of the place

where these races were first run so many years ago.

Didn't manage to find any winners though...
