knowlegable brummie
i have come to a halt in my research of my grt. grt. grandfather DOB about 1811, marriage about 1830, and DOD uncertain. I believe him to be a Catholic and, therefore, any Parish Records are presumably unavailable unless able to visit St. Chad's Archives.

I live in Devon and am unable to travel to Birmingham so would like to know if there is any way I can get Catholic records from a website. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have a subscription with Ancestry. Many thanks - KINS

Thank you Janice for the information. I had the feeling I would have to attend St Chad's Archives which I shall not be able to do. However, perhaps I can ask someone on the website you gave to find the information for me as long as it is safe and not too expensive !! KINS

The email address on the website is for the archivist, Father Sharp, and I am sure he will tell you what help they can offer. The only snag is that the registers are microfilmed and by parish so without that information it may not be possible to search. When I looked I knew which church so just went through that set of registers. A lot of the parishes did not have graveyards so burials are in "catholic sections" of the council graveyards. Their records are at the library but again are on microfilm so have to be searched for the right date and name.

Good luck

Hello again Janice

I know that some of the family were buried at St Joseph's Nechells but when I visited a while ago I only found one gravestone and the cemetery was in a poor state generally. I believe a new road was made near that site so perhaps the graves were removed. Also some of the family were probably buried at St Peter's in Broad Street which was also disrupted by building etc, I believe. I presume that the microfilm at the library is not somehow available on the internet. I am naive about such things, I am sorry.

Thanks again - KINS

Hello.

None of the catholic burials are at the library - the only place to see the records is St Chads as far as I know. St Peters graveyard was dug up a while ago and all the bones (sorry to be blunt but that is all they were by the time of removal) are at Oscott cemetery. There is a thread on this site (https://birminghamhistory.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=3110 ). Also here in the Mail https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/midlands-news/secret-removal-1000-bodies-buried-6734184

ST Josephs is in a bad way but I think St Chads has the records. This site used to have some names but there is a contact name so they might be able to help. https://www.stjosephs-nechells.co.uk/index.html

Good luck
Janice
