Wells Street Digbeth

I have a 1731 map of Birmingham and Well Street is shown as being the continuation of Digbeth leading up to Park Street just below St Martins Church.

This is a photo of the old Tripe House in Well Street which doesn't look too safe supported by wooden supports.

Up to about 1862 Well St is listed as Wells St in directories.
However I am not convinced that the picture of the tripe house is Well St. There is no evidence in directories between 1849 and 1900 of a tripe house around no 23 (as seen numbered on the wall). However from about 1862 till about 1888 there was a tripe house at 23 & 24 Digbeth, which for was next to John Hare, carver & gilder (note the gilder on the fascia of the shop next door in the picture). A picture of this house, with title visible on fascia is below. This looks like the same building

yes mike i think you are right about the tripe being at 23/24 digbeth..can see the numbering on wendys photo...as mal pointed out on post 2 well st was a continuation of digbeth...my grandparents were 51 and 55 digbeth in 1928...

Yes Lyn, the 1731 map does show a Well St between Upper mill lane and St martins, but this is not shown on the 1839 map, and the photograph could not have been taken before about 1840 , as photography did not exist. Anyway there is no mention of a tripe shop there before about 1862. So the title of the photograph is a bit like saying The council house is on Ann St.

totally understand mike...given the low numbering of the tripe house on wendys pic i guess that whoever put the location of the tripe house in well st could be forgiven as well st was a continuation of digbeth which is actually where it was..i will now save that pic again but edit the address..

thanks mike....
