Vine Street Aston

Good morning jill
Firstly it is great to know you are still around and its a great surprize to me to hear from you on the forum again
i dont know whether you ever mislead one of my forums regarding your family did not buy the shop ;because i can and never will dismiss it as a f a matter of fact i know that your parents did buy the shop on lichfield rd yards from the vine ;
and my aunt my dads sister lived at no, ten yards from the pub around the corner they was val and christine mardsen ;
at number ten ; getting back to the shop my mother told me at the period of time and the excact day and time when my mother
told us that her parents sold the shop so i knew early a that and whom bought it ;my mother was disapointed at tht time ; as they sold it
as we only lived along the rd ;so i myself know excactly where and when whom was involved so i do not have to go through the land registry ;
and yes i knew yourparents had bought it then; with out any problems
secondly debie kiely ; yes mrs teal; was posh and kept a lovely little house and house proud she was indeed and i have previously said way back
in time i knew frankie ;very well as we used to visit them often; i was married to jeanette williams her neice and his cousin
the other relatives lived around inwainwright st ; and the others in alma street and wryley birch estate erdington ;
jean ; the bagshaws are connected to me my brother maried into the family and still is and so is trevour and carol
and my brother dve and mary bagshaw live in stoneydelph tamworth even still today ;
it is a small world we live in ;
jill ; i still recall the shop after your parents bought the shop as i was still around aong the rd next to thompsons the butchers
when you was a nippr ; a ltt girl at te time we celebrated the queens coronation in that shop just before your faml bought it
when i say we i mean the whole of cromwell terrace only ;the whole twenty familys and the kids of the terrace
well jill ; it was nice to hear from you and its nice to know you are still tuned in to the forum

may i wish you a merry christmas and a very happy and prosperous new year to come ; best wishes astonian;;

not to go barmy with the slack she new whom i was apparently i learnt she was related to my mothers relations
other wise she may have said sling your hook son ; ha;

I remember the winter of 1947 waiting in the Coke crowd and then walking and pushing a truck load of coke to Birdbrook Rd Great Barr via Moor Lane , it was freezing, but that's how things were in those days.

John Harper agian. Lived up the terrace in Vine Street (vine terrace) Happy days 1952 / 1962 Just remembering the co-op milkman with the horse Bantom, blimey what a memory, where did that come from, Went to Manor Park Infants and Junior Schools, Fetched coal from Ilsleys, went to see Dr Gould, And used to fetch my mom Five park drive from Harrisons. or was it Winspers, had a friend call coates who had the green grocers in Church Lane Great Days, went to Johny Wrights christmas party for kids , and traded in the old clothes for money by Aston station, oh and collected bottles, for return worth a 1d each

John

Hi John I went to Manor Park seniors. My aunt's doctor was Doctor Gould too. Mom used to shop at the green grocers in Church lane as she always said there was more choice than Mrs Cook in Holte road plus the fact she always had a fag on the go and rested it by the scales.

I remember Taylors the toy shop on the Lichfield road ,my nan who lived at 85 Sandy lane had a club card at Taylors and it ran all the year ,she put the odd 5 shilling on
her card when she had it to spare and at xmas me and my brothers had a good gift in our pillow case. One year i had a new two wheeler bike.

rob128, My late Wife Doreen worked some years at Eric Taylors toy shop after I came out of the RAF in 1956, when his Mother died in 1961 we bought her house from Him (Hillside Rd Erdington) at a reduced price as he was very fond of my Wife in a fatherly way. He lived with his Wife in Kingsbury Rd Curdworth, he served in the Army in WW2, a very nice man. I remember when his delivery of James Bond Aston Martin Corgi cars arrived he gave the 1st one to my daughter (she is now 56 and still has it). Happy days. Previous to buying the house we live in an old back to back in Vicarage Rd Eric

I would imagine a number of members on this thread would remember my Wife's Aunt Ann who ran the little shop opposite Manor Park girls school in Vicarage Rd, a few doors down from Sycamore Rd, a lot of the girls would come across the road to buy their sweets and pop. We lived up the adjoining entry (4/128). Eric

l know the area real well,my g/parents lived in church lane, infact my g/father Billy Coates was born and died there, and the vine was his hang out..he passed away in 1947...l worked at John Wrights from 1950 to 1958 when l left to come to Texas..my mother lived in church Lane untill she married my dad Wilfred Barr who lived in Park Road, he also went to the boys brigade at Dyson hall also my brother was in the scouts at Dyson hall...in those days people did'nt move very far away from family as there was a lot of Coates just around there, just reading this thread has taken me back many years and it seems only like yesterday...its nice to have good memories the world always seemed a lot nicer and kinder place then....Brenda

Hi Brenda Had a friend called Teddy Coates who lived in the Greengrocers

Hi jaffa123
Just picked up on your thread saying you lived at number 28 park street ,and you are a great old friend of my beloved sheila Marsden whom is intact my first cousin and her mom and dad was frank and Edith
And her mom is my dads sister we lived around the corner along on Lichfield road by Aston,s the
Cake shop and Thompsons the butchers ,her sisters are Valerie and Christine sheila was the youngest
One,her father was frank he came from Wigan and always worked hard at Ansells. Brewery
On the lorries and they was always in our house up Cromwell square with the girls
I last seen valarie quite afew years back now it was at Christine's son tony,s wedding in birmingham
Harbourne then to kings heath reception where I met val,
Sheila I last heard of is living in west Heath birmingham on my last account and she was running a pub over there
With the guy she met and married but unfortunelately it never worked out she left him
And the pub I. Think it was the dingo pub over there before it was demoed I do not know what
Happen end to him sheila met another guy that what broke the marriage up, but sadly he only
Used her and she left him but with another guy in west Heath I think he is or was a BT Telephone eng,
This is such a coincidence to day typing to you as an old friend of sheila and the girls and of course
Both parents be great friends
I say that because we are number one cousins especially Christine, Christine and myself was very close
Out of my big family eight boys two girls even when we was grown up adults today
We never lost contact with each other I went to her wedding to a tony Jones
From Catherine street but over the years after having great sons and a daughter
Tony got abusive to her and gave her a brutal life he loved his drink and he was a milk man
For midland counties dairies as it was then he left her for much younger women
He left the dairies because of his drink problem so he started up in the market trade big
Time and made it big with wealth always going for the younger model sad blighty
I am glad he did really he was using violence on her it was a good job that frank her father
Had died because frank would have sorted him out right left and centre
But today I have to say to you that my beloved cousin Christine is dying rapidinly
With cancer her weight loss is falling off quite fast she his down to five stone
She does not want anybody to see her in the state she is in she as never drunk booze or smoked
Yet she as got this dammed cancer just like her hard working husband wild he never drank nor smokes
Yet he was unwell for a week and went into hospital and died it broke her heart
Wilfbiught themselves a smashing big camper in Brian where we have a six berth van
Not far from her on the same sight and that's what she done years ago after wilfs death she left brum and moved I to the van permantly we used to see each other often but just of late no I have not seen her
I got a phone call from my younger brother whom is in brum to tell meval as phoned
To pass the message on and she will keep us up dated at every stage now
If you recall Christine always dressed up to the nines and with HDR make up on and eye shadow
And her beehive hair style she was just a look a like dusty Springfield all my life
I nicked named her dusty because of her. Looks
I think I recall your name from all those yesterday years, do you recall the bagshaws or the val Sensors
She had a brother called roger they got married but val fell for some one afterwards
And she his still with him I believe he his Alarm bell specialist
Best wishes Astonian,,,,,, Alan,,,,

Hi Brenda
You said there were plenty of Coates family around there in our Yesteryears was one of them
Running the chip shop on Victoria road just around the corner from the school with the bakery shop
On the corner home bakery making fresh bread there big cottage loafs and etc,
The name rings a bell with me because I went to dyson hall but I was in the life bouys
And the scouts used to come the same time, but also my two older brothers both in the boys brigade
At the same time we are speaking one brother Ronnie was the lead drummer at the front of the brigade
Followed by my second eldest billy whom as died about two years now he was the bugler along
With a friend of ours meaning school friend and our parents are friends was I say that because also my parents died many years back, but getting back to the question of the family Coates either they took over from
The Gibsons and Coates then or vice a versa it was my mothers family used to run the little news agents
Around the corner from the school facing the police station for many years way back in time
When she was a kid ,my oldest sister Pauline used to attend there and they went to London
With the school to the house of parliaments and they met an MP I cannot think of his name at the moment
But she and her friend had there picture taken with him out side the front door of Parliament
I cannot recall the other girls name but its in a book written by some one whom wrote about the school and Aston
And there photograph is in it
Best wishes Alan,,, Astonian,,,,,
