Do you remember Harrison's corner shop on corner of Vine Street Ray

Apologies for resurrecting such an old thread. I am the grand daughter of Joseph Edwin Harrison who was the only child of Mr and Mrs Harrison who kept that shop. I know very little about them and as my grandad sadly passed away December 2009 and my nan is not very well any more I can't really enquire. If anyone has any further info I'd be really grateful. Family legend has it that my great grandmother was something of a 'tough' character :) Hope someone can help. Thanks in advance .

Hi

I remember Mrs Harrison very well, always helpfull as were most of the little shops then in the 1940/50's grey haired and wearing what we used to call granny apron .

At the top end of Vine Street in Sandy Lane was another little shop Katie Dampers it was a shop withs the walls covered with 100's drawers from floor to ceiling from small one's to large ones all painted Council Green.

Half way down Vines Street on the other side to Harrison Corner shop was a printers can't remember the name.

Across the road from Harrison' in Church Road there was an Ansells outdoor and on the corner of Lichfield Road was "The Domestic" a household furniture shop they used to run clubs that people would collect shilling from neighbours and every few weeks you would have a credit note to spend it was called a chance.

On the other corner of Church Road & Lichfield Road was a cafe I think it was Jelfs you used to get a cup of tea and piece of toast with drippen on lovely grub.

Them was the days everybody was glad to get any little food they could.

Hi Astonian,

I just came across this thread more or less by accident, and I see that you mention Dyson Hall. This is where my parents met, about 1937, when they were in a musical society. Do you have any more information or, even better, pictures of Dyson Hall from those days? My late dad talked of it a lot, but I never really figured out precisely where it was. Thanks in advance, Alan,

Big Gee

HI RAY ;
Nice to hear from you again yes you are correct in your sense of direction and yes it was the jelfs cafe on the other side of church lane
and lichfield rd aston ; it was my grand fathers coffee shop ; and e jelfs family cafe for previous years which was passed from one jelf to another right up until the mid
fifties where grand father sold it to his sister ivy that shop was passed from generation to generation right up until then ;
as you know they was dotted all around brum ; usaly about a mile apart ; soon after that ivy sold the shop to an out sider ; which later became
a flower shop ; and at one time afew years ago we had a member on this forum whom her parents she said bought the shop from a jelfs
but strangly the member was called flower girl ; but she as disapeared for some reason ; ;
still not to worry we celebrated the queens coronation in that big shop; all but most of the people from the cromwell terrace which was just along from the shop on
the oppersite side of the rd yards from thompsons the butchers ; the grand father erniest jelf and grand mother victoria hinton ;
whom was very wealthy ; supplied the table and chairs and all the food stuffs from there two foods provisions ware housing one on tyburn rd and one at aston cross [ park lane ] for the celebrations of the coronation ; of the queen for all the kids and adults for the tennants of cromwell terrace which was twenty familys
we had it out on the lichfield rd and when it finished only selected people was invited that being the grown ups and there kids
all went down across the rdto continue the queens coronation and the gropwn ups all chered and raised a glass of somthink to the ueen and shout hip ; hip
hooray ; graham ; yes i remember the dyson hall very well indeed and all that went on there there was alot going on there of alsorts of shows regular and nightly
i was in the buoys brigade and my other two older brothers and friends was in the first company of the boys brigade ;
ronnie was the lead drummer billy whom as recently died at seventy years old was the front bugle we was also in the dyson hall choir ; all three of us ;
our long standing friends today still as we was all neibours and school frinds whom are still alive today was also in the brigade
was johnny lloyed ;from white house street and neibour to the chinns ; parents and the jarretts of cromwel terrace was [ raymon and terry jarratt ]
and my old mate colin gaskin ;whom lived at number one the terace ; i . m still searching for him ; he may have died or alive i do not know ; but still searching for him ; graham ; sorry to say i have not got any pics of the hall i knew one time we had pics on here but as you know some scoundrel on here as skanked the pics of our great society still may be after reading this one may appear ; yet ; still i have my memories and the pics as clear as god made apples in my mind ;
by the way i am slowly getting use of my arm back so soner or later i wil pay you both a visit ;
have a nice day to you all best wishs astonian ;;

I've just been in my vegie patch watching the green parrots flying around and I was suddenly whisked to the other side of the world and another side of my life. A little boy pulling bags of coal to the side of a lorry to help my dad in Vine Street and Sandy Lane. Taint fair bringing memories back like that, my kids think I'm mad. Regards, David.

Many thanks for the reply Ray, it's nice to know someone remembers them. I thought you might like to see these pictures. The first shows my great grandmother Charlotte Elizabeth Harrison nee Roath with my uncle John Harrison. The second shows my great grandfather Joseph Edwin Harrison and my uncle Joe Harrison. The third shows Charlotte Elizabeth with my uncle Joe and my mother Mary Elizabeth Harrison, they are outside the shop. I would estimate the date to be around 1953

Hi Astonian
Just for the record. I am the flowershopgirl and as can be verified from land registry records, my parents did in fact purchase the property on Lichfield Road from a member of the Jelf family and sold it through the normal legal channels to the council in the seventies. My reasons for not posting any further articles were because I am quite reticent about public forums and because I was not prepared for the amount of interest it created. I still read the forum on a regular basis and view the posts with great interest.

Good morning jill
Firstly it is great to know you are still around and its a great surprize to me to hear from you on the forum again
i dont know whether you ever mislead one of my forums regarding your family did not buy the shop ;because i can and never will dismiss it as a f a matter of fact i know that your parents did buy the shop on lichfield rd yards from the vine ;
and my aunt my dads sister lived at no, ten yards from the pub around the corner they was val and christine mardsen ;
at number ten ; getting back to the shop my mother told me at the period of time and the excact day and time when my mother
told us that her parents sold the shop so i knew early a that and whom bought it ;my mother was disapointed at tht time ; as they sold it
as we only lived along the rd ;so i myself know excactly where and when whom was involved so i do not have to go through the land registry ;
and yes i knew yourparents had bought it then; with out any problems
secondly debie kiely ; yes mrs teal; was posh and kept a lovely little house and house proud she was indeed and i have previously said way back
in time i knew frankie ;very well as we used to visit them often; i was married to jeanette williams her neice and his cousin
the other relatives lived around inwainwright st ; and the others in alma street and wryley birch estate erdington ;
jean ; the bagshaws are connected to me my brother maried into the family and still is and so is trevour and carol
and my brother dve and mary bagshaw live in stoneydelph tamworth even still today ;
it is a small world we live in ;
jill ; i still recall the shop after your parents bought the shop as i was still around aong the rd next to thompsons the butchers
when you was a nippr ; a ltt girl at te time we celebrated the queens coronation in that shop just before your faml bought it
when i say we i mean the whole of cromwell terrace only ;the whole twenty familys and the kids of the terrace
well jill ; it was nice to hear from you and its nice to know you are still tuned in to the forum

may i wish you a merry christmas and a very happy and prosperous new year to come ; best wishes astonian;;

HI DAVID
Did you not cross over the main rd into church lane and go and fetch your coal from illsleys yard next to the car company on the corner
or did you not have a truck and leave the old florin deposit whilst you ran back across the lichfield rd with your coal
or did you like us some times if the old man facied the coke from the gas works and get into those mile long ques as far back as st marys in that dep snow we used to get ;i had to traped down from thompsons cromwell terrace to get one of her barrows of coal and he would tell the old lady
not to go barmy with the slack she new whom i was apparently i learnt she was related to my mothers relations
other wise she may have said sling your hook son ; ha;
i met to people the other month from vine street her name was pearl and he was named pete i used to walk dowbn the vine street with her and her friends
along with pete and another crowd from the bottom of park street there house usedf to have the big air raid shelter at there garden
would you recall that ; my cousin val lived in park street and she married a kid roger henshaw when they was young also from park street ;
all the best david and a merry christmas to you best wishes alan ;; astonian;;

I remember the winter of 1947 waiting in the Coke crowd and then walking and pushing a truck load of coke to Birdbrook Rd Great Barr via Moor Lane , it was freezing, but that's how things were in those days.

John Harper agian. Lived up the terrace in Vine Street (vine terrace) Happy days 1952 / 1962 Just remembering the co-op milkman with the horse Bantom, blimey what a memory, where did that come from, Went to Manor Park Infants and Junior Schools, Fetched coal from Ilsleys, went to see Dr Gould, And used to fetch my mom Five park drive from Harrisons. or was it Winspers, had a friend call coates who had the green grocers in Church Lane Great Days, went to Johny Wrights christmas party for kids , and traded in the old clothes for money by Aston station, oh and collected bottles, for return worth a 1d each

John

Hi John I went to Manor Park seniors. My aunt's doctor was Doctor Gould too. Mom used to shop at the green grocers in Church lane as she always said there was more choice than Mrs Cook in Holte road plus the fact she always had a fag on the go and rested it by the scales.

I remember Taylors the toy shop on the Lichfield road ,my nan who lived at 85 Sandy lane had a club card at Taylors and it ran all the year ,she put the odd 5 shilling on
her card when she had it to spare and at xmas me and my brothers had a good gift in our pillow case. One year i had a new two wheeler bike.

rob128, My late Wife Doreen worked some years at Eric Taylors toy shop after I came out of the RAF in 1956, when his Mother died in 1961 we bought her house from Him (Hillside Rd Erdington) at a reduced price as he was very fond of my Wife in a fatherly way. He lived with his Wife in Kingsbury Rd Curdworth, he served in the Army in WW2, a very nice man. I remember when his delivery of James Bond Aston Martin Corgi cars arrived he gave the 1st one to my daughter (she is now 56 and still has it). Happy days. Previous to buying the house we live in an old back to back in Vicarage Rd Eric

I would imagine a number of members on this thread would remember my Wife's Aunt Ann who ran the little shop opposite Manor Park girls school in Vicarage Rd, a few doors down from Sycamore Rd, a lot of the girls would come across the road to buy their sweets and pop. We lived up the adjoining entry (4/128). Eric

l know the area real well,my g/parents lived in church lane, infact my g/father Billy Coates was born and died there, and the vine was his hang out..he passed away in 1947...l worked at John Wrights from 1950 to 1958 when l left to come to Texas..my mother lived in church Lane untill she married my dad Wilfred Barr who lived in Park Road, he also went to the boys brigade at Dyson hall also my brother was in the scouts at Dyson hall...in those days people did'nt move very far away from family as there was a lot of Coates just around there, just reading this thread has taken me back many years and it seems only like yesterday...its nice to have good memories the world always seemed a lot nicer and kinder place then....Brenda
