Thomas Bland & Sons The Gunmakers

I have started to look beginning at the end of your tree with Edwin (born 1832) and James Theodore (born 1829). I will work out how to post the info in a bit - suffice to say I am not sure you have the correct James on the 1881 census.

Bronwen - I have tried to see f I can fill in any of your gaps.

Edwin John Bland born abt 1833 dies aged 39 in 1872. Haven't found a burial record but there is a death recorded in Hackney where the census shows he was living in 1871.
He had married in 1854 cert attached. For 1861 census you put no Bay Street. It existed until the late 1960s and am attaching a map showing number 20.
1871 census Sandringham Road is still there. Number 80 marked in red. I think the house is still there – it looks an old house and the map shape looks the same.

James Theodore Bland born 1829.
1841 census with parents and Edwin in Weaman Street.
1851 married to Mary Ann not sure of the name of the street in Birmingham
1871 with Mary in London
Now this is different from what you had: 1881 back in Birmingham in Wilton Street but still with Mary - census is over 2 pages
1891 Camden Street in Brmingham with Mary
1901 just James and Mary at home - no children
Then I think James dies in 1905 as there is a death registered, of James Theodore Bland born abt 1829 , at Droitwich (not too far away). I think Mary dies in 1908 - death registered at Kings Norton.

Hi Janice

This is great. I shall print them out and update my tree. The most 'disturbing' .... is that I had Sarah Jane Probert as being the daughter of John Probert not James. See my 1851 census attached. I will need to look at this more carefully as I have quite a bit of information on the Proberts but there is no James.

Thanks for the maps of Sandringham Road and Bay st. My brother is in London right now I might try and get him to go and have a look.

Regards Bronwen

Should have said all this is from Ancestry. Will try and see if I can find any more out tomorrow. I will just supply any info I find it is then up to you to see if it is the right people or not.
Have found a baptism record at St Martins for a Sarah Probert daughter of James (sorry if it causes a problem) and Elizabeth. Think it is the same one on the marriage cert as James is an "iron founder" on both.

I am keen to have it right of course so it is not causing a 'problem' Thanks for the latest detail you have up-loaded.

I shall go back to Family Search which is where I got some of the Probert stuff I think.

cheers Bronwen

I intended to look for Thomas (born 1819 or 1822) today but I am puzzled. You refer to some research from a website Thomas Bland was born in 1822 in Birmingham. He was almost certainly the son of James Bland (born about 1790-1800) and nephew of Edwin Bland (b.1796); Edwin appears to have been James' younger brother.
However, the Thomas who seems to have been associated with the firm and married to Agness Amelia (who is named in the will of Thomas) gives his Father's name as Edwin on his marriage certificate. His baptism also names Edwin and Sarah not James.
So who is the Thomas son of James?? I haven't found him yet.

That was on a website about the gunmakers - I have never thought it was correct. And the fact that he says 'He was almost certainly' gives it away I think. So I wouldn't go on trying to find Thomas the son of James!

The first attachment
Is the Parish Harbourne?
Is the area Stratford?

I am confused about the middle attachment you have sent
1819 Sept 3 Thomas Bland, St Philip’s, Birmingham, Warwickshire, Eng. This is what I have.
1819 May 19 Thomas Bland I think you have him born this year?
1823 Aug 4 Brewery St, Birmingham What is this one - is it a death?

Great to have the will - a significant amount of money for the times.

Thanks & regards Bronwen

Sorry - first attachment is Harborne which is about 5 miles away from the centre of Birmingham and, in 1854, was in the county of Staffordshire.
Should have said second attachment is his baptism record. Born May 1819 and baptised in 4 Oct 1825. Baptised at St Philips. The bit with 1823 belongs to the record on the line above.

Thanks Janice, I had just googled and found Harborne. But hadn't realised the abbreviation for Staffordshire.

The Bland's way back came from Yorkshire, there is a town called Bland. Well there are Blands in that area and when I looked at the meaning of the name that is what it came up with.

Historical Description
Bland, a hamlet in the township and parish of Sedbergh, W.R. Yorkshire.

cheers Bronwen

Indeed!

THOMAS THOMAS THOMAS THOMAS

Have you ever been to this paart of the world. I have been to Britain 3 times (I have a son who lives in London who will never return). I think on the train to Edinburgh I could see Birmingham? I've done that trip twice, my daughter was living in Edinburgh last year studying for a year so I visited.

Regards Bronwen

Never been to your part of the world. I think the train to Edinburgh from London would pass through Birmingham.
