Thomas Attwood statue to be moved from Sparkbrook

Jun 6 2008
A vandalised statue of one of Birmingham’s first MPs is to be restored at a cost of £70,000.
The 149-year-old statue of Thomas Attwood will be removed from Larches Green in Sparkbrook by the city council next week for refurbishment work and will eventually be relocated at a more suitable site.
The figure is made of Sicilian marble standing on a granite column set on a base of York stone and cost £900 to build when it was unveiled in 1859.
Attwood, a leading early 19th century campaigner for universal suffrage, became one of Birmingham’s first two MPs in 1832.
Ray Hassall, the cabinet member for leisure, sport and culture, said: “We have been extremely successful in the last few years in returning several major historic monuments to their original glory.
“The two remaining priorities for restoration are the statues of King Edward VII and Thomas Attwood. We now have the funding in place to move the statue of King Edward VII to Centenary Square so I am confident it will only be a matter of time before we are able to find a new home for Thomas Attwood.”

Thankyou Jennyann,, for bringing good news to the Forums attention,

Its good to hear of Statues & other Historically significant local memorabilia being restored to honour again
Too often we hear of the present day "Vandalism" or the Stealing of Metal plaques & statues of War Heroes,
The theives who steal these are lower than the "base" metal they insult in their greed,,

So Jennyann, thanks & thanks to the "Council" for using some of our rates & taxes,,Wisely,,this time
Cheers JohnY

ps; I would suggest relocating Thomas Attwood,s statue in Halesowen town centre where he was born Oct 1783
or at Malvern where he ended his days in March 1859 after a long & successful political career.
