  • HI folks the server that hosts the site completely died including the Hdd's and backups.
    Luckily i create an offsite backup once a week! this has now been restored so we have lost a few days posts.
    im still fixing things at the moment so bear with me and im still working on all images 90% are fine the others im working on now
    we are now using a backup solution

Just found this nice painting by Warren Blackham.....any ideas about where and when? It's listed as New Street, but nowt else.....? Doesn't sit right with me....

it could be new st dennis...think there was a theatre nearby but of course it may not be new st :rolleyes:

If it is Lyn, and I probably agree, I am just a little surprised that we have never heard of it before? At least I haven't, and there's nowt on the net or on here? Keep safe...xx
 
On the census entry it says “Back entrance to theatre” in the line above “Theatre Stores”. So maybe the front of the Theatre Stores was on another Street. Viv.
 
where exactly was queen st...i cant seem to find it on the map but go back a few pages on the 71 census and it mentions pinfold st and lower temple st bit confused at the min

morning jan i have to say i dont think i have heard of queens street just going to have a cuppa and get back to it:rolleyes: i wonder if it was one of those streets that changed its name also on the 71 does it say in the ward of market hall?
 
also reading pedros link it says a rare view of gt queens st as it was called at the time so most likely a name change happened looking at the old painting in the link gt queen st ran alongside new st station
 
For info, Great Queen Street became Queens Drive. Queens Drive was a carriageway through the centre of the Station. It disappeared when the old New Street Station was replaced in the 1960s. Viv.

Bingo. I've found a copy in a book of an 1839 map. (Will post when I get a chance to scan it). Queen Street is marked.
It runs from back (? assuming Theatre Royal frontage was on New Street) of the theatre across Lower Temple Street. Looks as if it might have become Stephenson Street.
It is almost parallel to Pinfold Street.
By 1851 only the bit behind the theatre seems to remain. Swallowed up by New Street Station.

Had this map saved so no idea where it came from. Dated 1839. Queen Street in red. By 1851 only the blue bit remained.

thanks jan....just looking at the blue line they must have been pretty well crammed in because on the 71 census there are 10 pages of households

I thought that - but by 1851 New Street Station seems to have taken over the rest of Queen Street. Unless they had included the properties in Great Queens Street?
I hadn't realised it was licensed premises but I can't find it listed as such in Kelly's - at the moment.
 
CORRECTION: Nowhere near Queens Drive and it was, as Janice says, Stephenson Street. Had to look at my Godfrey map to confirm it though!

just looking again at the 71 jan and there were courts there so that could explain so many households
