Does anyone have any information on The White Swan pub on the corner of Nechells Park Road and Cheatham Street, please? I don't suppose it's still there. My Dad and his family, who lived in Stella Street, used to drink there in the late 1930's. I would love to see a photo of the pub. Thanks. Eileen.

But I Will Asked Her In The Morning As

I have this pic' that I think may be the pub you mean. I was told it was near Nechells Park Rd & Nechells Place. I can't tell the name from the pic', but with the placing of the Gas works and the Gasometers it looks like the corner of Nechells Pl and Cato St North.

Someone else may know the exact name and place of the pub.

Pom

No Pom, admittedly its a bird but this is the Hen & Chickens, which I think was perhaps on Rocky Lane?

I've got a pic which is labelled White Swan Bloomsbury St but this doesn't sound right either

There is a mention of a White Swan PH at 68 Nechells Park Rd at the jinction of Cheatham Rd in the 1913 Kelly's.

In the 1946 Kelly's the same location has the description, C H Mountford Tool Maker.

As Eileen you say your family drank in there until the late 30's it must have gone out of business some time shortly after that date. I think it might have beeen more probable it was bombed out during the war.

hello all with reguard to the confusion about the white swan ,from 1950 onwards which is when i was born i can only remember on one corner of cheatam st was a place that used to make brushes and sold other household utencils like buckets and so on and on the other corner was a small garage which around 1970 moved to the top of cattles grove oppersite bulivants but in between the garage and bulivants was a co op store and next door to that was a small pub called the soldiers return and oppersite was smiths the hairdressers going down nechells park rd towards the baths the next pub was the new inns corner of stuart st and oppersite the baths which is still there today is the villa tavern which was my regular watering hole as to the white hart it was on the corner of nechells park rd and railway terrace and the other end of railway terrace was the mitre hope this helps

In the 1940 Kelly's( which was presumably really for 1939), it gave 68 Nechells Park Road as C H Mountford Tool Merchant, so presumably the pub disappeared before the war

i believe the rupert building is still standing but i am not sure if its open
as to the heartlands club before it moved to aston church rd and changed its name it used to be in nechells park rd behind a laundry shop and the clubs name was the nechells unionist club but alas it moved and i think it lost its character { my opinion }

This was how the Prince Rupert looked in January 2004 so I would have thought they'd have bulldozed it by now :(

i remember the garage at the top of cattles grove,it did not last long. before that was a big house owned by the gasworks.
i have asked before anyone got any pics of cattles grove. please
i was born there and there was no pub,at said location "The White Swan pub on the corner of Nechells Park Road and Cheatham Street",

The white Swan was on the corner of Cheatham Road pre WW2, and The Woodman was on the corner of Cattells Grove until it was demolished.

The sepia photo, Nechells Park Road, suggest prior to November 1922 when trolleybuses replaced the trams due to the track being worn out.
The mini van says more recent. :D

looking at the pic.i still dont remember that pub.on the corner. .the woodman yes i lived 4 doors away from it.in 1949/1961

Pete

If you wasn't around before 1944 then you wouldn't remember the White Swan, What you most likely remember on the two Nechells Park Road corners are these two businesses.
