The Swan Yardley

An early Swan pub, Yardley. This must be pre-1900. It's seen better days as a building to the right is boarded up and the door on the left is covered with advertising. Although the pub itself still seems open for business in the photo. Viv.

By c1910, a new inn in its place. And had also become known as a hotel. Viv.

My memory of the Swan Hotel in Yardley was Sunday, March 25th 1961. I was invited there for the Sunday evening concert as a guest musician. At the time I was living in Leicester, and had left my lovely overdue pregnant wife, with a friend.

Dashed home after the evening, and found my wife had been taken into hospital for the birth.

One the Monday afternoon I was playing for the Lord Mayor of Leicester at a function. I mentioned to him that my wife had just given birth to a healthy bouncing girl, and he invited me to take the lovely flowers off his table and present them to my wife, which I did.

So yes, happy memories of the Swan Inn, Yardley.

Thought we played a few gigs at the old Swan, maybe I am thinking of something else another band that you did not play for?

Hi John,

We played at both the Swan and the Wheat Sheaf in Yardley, but that would have been around the 1955/56 period before you and I quit 'Brum'.

Eddie

For info, the Swan was auctioned in 1898 and fetched £2450. Must have been just before demolition of the building in post #90 and re-building in post #93. Viv.

I have never known the Swan to be called " Ye Olde Swan" or "The Old Swan" It's has been called The Swan or The Swan Inn and toward the end The Swan Hotel, but never as far as I can remember "Ye Olde Swan"

Every year Marsh & Baxters held their staff Xmas party at the Swan.We were never invited because we were not classed as staff. But in1957 they wanted someone to blow up the Balloons.I volunteered and got invited. On the night knowing most of the staff (by doing repairs on their cars ) they bought me drinks.I was drinking Rum & Aniseed. At the end of the night got to the top of the stairs missed my footing and you know what happened.Someone who knew were I lived put me in their car and took me home. Was I embarrassed on the Monday when I went into work:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

My ancestor, William Starling and his daughter Sophia (my great grandmother) ran the Swan in the late 1800s. Sophia sang at the opening of the remodeled pub. This is the newspaper advertisement for when they took it over: Lot 1 – “The Swan Inn” Coventry Road, Yardley,- all that valuable Old-established freehold property (free from any title or lease) known as “the Swan” on the main Coventry Road, at Yardley, now occupied by Mr Walter Jennings, and for very many years let to his ancestors, with the Butcher’s Shop, Registered slaughter house, stabling, and premises, and field of sound Old turf Land in the rear, with long frontages to two main roads, containing 2 acres 0 roods 11 perches, or 10024 square yards, and now quite ripe for building purposes. “The Swan” (licensed in 1605) is one of the best known roadside houses near Birmingham, and the present tenancy being an annual one (at the approportioned rent set forth in the sale particulars) the lot is specially worthy the attention of Brewers.

Well, there is a blast from the Past, (The Dirty Duck), from the 60's, The Swan, and Hen and Chickens, Wolverhampton Road, were the great venues of the day. Paul
