The grand theatre..brum...

I must have passed the Grand hundreds of times and never thought anything about it. Only when places like this have gone from the landscape do regrets occur. Never went into the place but there is always a sense of loss of familiar surroundings.

Hallo Betty, Thank goodness someone remembers the Masque Ballroom, when my wife and I were courting we would go there on Saturday nights during 53-54. In August 54 we got married and the first Saturday after our honeymoon we went to the Masque only to find it had suddenly changed into a Club for the Irish, is it still a club I wonder? Geff

Here is a photo of The Masque a long time before it became the Harp? I never used it as either. The last time I was down that way the building was still there and I think it was some sort of a community centre.

pmc 1947, thanks so much for pic of Masque Ballroom, thats where I met my late Wife Doreen whilst I was on leave from the RAF Xmas 1951. I was staying with my Nan in Queens Rd Aston and found out she lived just round the corner in Vicarage Road, so we went home together, 12 months later we were married, 4 months later we were in Hong Kong where I was stationed in Kai Tak, happy days. Hello PMC1947

Many thanks for the photograph of The Masque Ballroom. Had a good look but could not
see myself ? ? 'praps as well. How do you do that? ? It seems that each time something
is mentioned you come up with a picture .

Hi Betty & Cookie

I'm glad you enjoyed the photo, I'm only too glad to be able to sometimes be able to provide a photo to go with the memories that people share with us on this forum. I only wish I had started collecting photos earlier than I did so that my collection was bigger.

Phil

Hello, just had a thought? The Casino was part of the MECCA ballroom co. which was a huge company.
Not sure if it still exists but if so perhaps someone could check with them re: it originally being The
Grand Theatre ? May have archives or some such ?
Betty.

img146.jpg These three were in a folder together so I assume, and I do hope I am correct, that the two pictures of the buildings are the Grand Theatre.

Illustration of Corporation Street viewed from the Grand Theatre in the 1890s. Looks like a steam tram in the middle of the picture. Dave.
