The Golden Lion

There is a very fine display on Birmingham centre, with three fascinating snaps of: The Golden Lion, The Old Crown, St John's Church (Stoneyard) - where the first English language bible was printed (before the time of the building in the photograph). The definition, depth of field and dignity is worthy of note.

My question is that there was a massive bruhaha about relocating the 1400s tavern removed just before WW I from Deritend High Street to the nearby park. (Surprisingly not Highgate!) The great confabulation attendant was quite a roburant. But then perhaps overshadowed by a lot of scurrilous mountebank activity - such as the preposterous notion of renaming Moor Street to The Bull Ring instead of Moor Street Station at The Bull Ring (as though decent people have to think in Kit Kat sound bites). So, what is happening?

There was a cooperage as part of the pub, which was actually the only surviving one of that busy thoroughfare at that time - The Old Crown being still a manor house.

I consider the denizens and pioneers of Birmingham are entitled to better service than what has hitherto obtained.

Incidentally, the reach of Aston - as cited in the article at this site - was clearly very considerable. Is there a map of the extent and when it changed? (Presumably the Victorian era.)

Fascinating altogether and thanks for a beautifully contemplative display.

:?:
WHAT IS HAPPENING OR NOT WITH YE GOLDEN LION TAVERN?
GRAND EXPANSIVE PLANS WERE BEING LAID A REMARKABLY LONG TIME AGO.
:?

I was looking at "The Lion" in Cannon Hill Park only the other day. It is a sad site with bits of scaffold holding it together. Any restoration work seems to have come to a stop with the same notice about it being relocated in Derit end flapping in the wind. :(

BTW, hmld, it's good to see you back posting on the forum again - I've missed your input, which is always interesting, informative and sometimes exceptionally humorous. :)

THE SITUATION IS DEPLORABLE IN THE EXTREME.
I'M WONDERING IF THE GREAT CUSTARD FACTORY MIGHT NOT GET IN ON THE RESCUE AS IT IS CLEARLY VERY WELL FUNDED. THE RAILWAY ARCHES IS AN ASTONISHING THOUGH OBVIOUS DEVELOPMENT.
CONSIDERING THE VAST INVESTMENT IN SUCH PROJECTS AS THE BULL RING IT IS AT LEAST FANTASTIC THE TAVERN HAS BEEN DONE UP ON AND IN.
BREWERIES HAVE TAKEN VAST FORTUNES IN PENNIES AND SILVER YET HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE COMMUNITY WHAT EFFECTIVELY NEGLIGIBLE.
THE GRAND SCHEME OF HERITAGE TRAILS HAS APPARENTLY PUT IN A SLIGHT ATTENDANCE.
THE MUNICIPAL RESCOURCES OF SUCH AS THE PWD AND AS WELL VOLUNTEER LABOUR COULD QUICKLY WORK WONDERS. IT WOULD BEA NICE BBC TV PROJECT - WHICH IS IN OVERDRIVE TO DEVELOP AN ONGOING ROBUST SENSE OF LOCAL AS REGIONAL IDENTITY INVESTMENT.
ACTUALLY THE SITUATION AMOUNTS TO THE ANAESTHETIC.
AS A REAL ALE PUB AND NOSHERY THE ANCIENT LION WOULD UNDOUBTEDLY EXPERIENCE A NEW LEASE OF LIFE AND QUICKLY PAY ITS WAY.
ALTERNATIVELY A LOCAL HISTORY WITH PERHAPS A NOVELTY COMPONENT OF VICTUALS.
I RECALL ON THE BAR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM STUDENTS' UNION A SMALL OLD WOOD BARREL - I THINK A FIRKIN - OF A LIMITED OUTPUT REAL ALE WHICH WAS CONSIDERABLE POTENCY. THE ALE WAS DISPENSED OUT OF A WEE WOOD SPIGOT PIECE. SUCH FARE DISPENCED IN HALF PINT MEASURE WITH A ROBUST PASTY WOULD POWER UP PEDESTRIANS ON THEIR TRAIL JAUNTS.
TRAGICALLY SO OFTEN PUBLIC OFFICE ATTRACTS PEOPLE WHO ARE SO OFTEN OBTUSE TO THE EXTENT OF INCREDULITY TO SOON BECOME EXPERT CONTORIONISTS IN CONDUCTING ELABORATE FLAPDOODLE EXERCISES IN APOLOGETICS, CONCOCTING (OFTEN) ASTOUNDING EXCUSES FOR TRANSPARENTLY OBVIOUS INCOMPETENCE. THIS IS A CLASSIC INSTANCE.

SOME CORRESPONDENTS MIGHT RECALL ROD BIRCH POSTING A POLL AT THE VIRTUAL BRUM SITE IN ITS HEY DAY. A NAME FOR MOOR STREET RAIL STOP. I SUGGESTED MOOR STREET RAILWAY STATION AT THE BULL RING. THE RESPONSE WAS ASTOUNDING INASMUCH AS IT WAS ALL BUT CONSPICUOUS IN ITS ABSENCE.
ONE SOLUTION TO THE PLIGHT OF THE TAVERN WOULD BE TURN IT INTO AN ANNEXE OF THE OLD CROWN. AVAILABLE FOR PRIVATE FUNCTIONS AND A KIND OF REVOLVING THEME FOR SPECIALIST BREWS DONE BY ENTHUSIASTS SUCH AS C.A.M.R.A. THERE IS ALSO A BREWING CHEMISTRY OPERATION AT BIRMINGHAM UNIVERSITY. WHAT ARE THEY DOING? PROCEEDS COULD BE CHANNELED INTO ONGOING UPKEEP.
THE INSIDE COULD BE GENEROUSLY APPOINTED WITH MEMORABILIA: A KIND OF LIGHTENING WHISTLE STOP OLD TO EARLY MODERN HISTORY OVERVIEW WITH AN EMPHASIS ON LABOUR.
A SWILL OF ALE AN RICH SAVOURY PASTIE WOULD BE AIDED OF DIGESTION WITH THE EXHIBITS, WHICH WOULD PROVE A ROBUST CONVERSATION THEME.

THE SITUATION IS ALMOST TOO TIRING FOR WORDS.

I NOTICE A BBC PHOTO POSTING OF AN OPEN AIR CONCERT IN CANNON HILL PARK RECENTLY WITH A HOST OF GLOBE TROTTING CELEBRITIES GIVING FORTH IN TORRENTIAL RAIN TO A VAST ARRAY OF FANS WITH FLUFFED UP GLANDS.
ONE OF THE SNAPS REVEALS THE RED LION STILL STANDING - AND WITHSTANDING CONCUSSIVE WAVES OF MASSIVELY OVERAMPLIFIED TORRENTS OF SOUND.

AND THERE IT IS: right under one's nose, so-to-speak.

MAYBE THE ENTREPRENUEUR WHO CONVERTED THE CUSTARD FACTOR COULD WHIP UP A TRUST TO GET IT RELOCATED AT LONG LAST (THE PUB THAT IS)?

Thought you might like another look at the old pub HMLD

QUITE SO, ROD. THX.
A SORE OUTSTANDING POINT WHICH WILL NOT TAKE GARLIC AND HONEY POULTICE IS WHAT IN THE REIGN OF A MONTH OF SUNDAYS IS OBTAINING REGARDING THE EVENTUATION OF RELOCATION OF THIS SPLENDID ALTARPIECE?
ACCORDING TO ATMOSPHERICAL EXPOSTULATORY AS ADUMBRATION: nowt.

SMACKS OF THE ODDLY QUEER.

THE POLL ROD BIRCH POSTED FOR RENAMING MOOR STREET AT BIRMINGHAM BULL RING RAILWAY STATION WAS A FLOP.
IF MY MEMORY SERVES ME WELL BARELY THREE OR FIVE PERSONS CHIPPED IN.

IF THAT AINT PATHETICAL...

cromwell,
Unfortunately, it looks nothing like that now. These days it looks more like a very sad, crumbling hovel, held up with scaffolding. Next time I'm in the park I'll take a snap of it, together with the war memorial, which I haven't forgotten. :uglystupid2:

If someone had the finances to gather that up and rebuild it authentically in the Toronto Ontario area; open it up with Ansells on tap, it would make a fortune. It needs to be put to it's propper use.

Here is a photo of The Golden Lion, also showing St Johns Church, in 1875. It is from Dr Chris Upton's book Living -Back-to-Back.

That's intersesting Cromwell, I guess John's photo is an etching. Maybe a bit earlier than the photo. Chris Upton says of St Johns church, 'The 14th Century Chapel of St John has been encased in Georgian brick.'The buildings all around it being mediaeval - and demolished.

Here are the latest of the Golden Lion...

The Back (taken from far side of lake) - is that a body on the lawn?

This is how it was in the park in 1930's Oisin It seems to me now it's a deliberate disintegration job, forget it and it will just disappear.
