  • HI folks the server that hosts the site completely died including the Hdd's and backups.
    Luckily i create an offsite backup once a week! this has now been restored so we have lost a few days posts.
    im still fixing things at the moment so bear with me and im still working on all images 90% are fine the others im working on now
    we are now using a backup solution

ive just come across these cracking pics of the crooked house at himley...last time i was there was well over 35 years back and ive been meaning to go again..but unless there is now a bus route to it ive got no chance as a car is needed and i dont drive:cry:

My son had his stag do there about 11 years ago. It was a different one as they went on a clay pidgeon shoot. I must sort out the photo's there is one of them trying to get my dear old uncle Jack over a style in his wheelchair....he loved the day!
 
It's one of them pubs that you feel drunk before you start

Lovely piece of film there Alf, thanks. I visited here many times when I was much younger, and enjoyed every trip. (Thats not due to the drink, by the way).
 
The Crooked house, or the Glynne Arms is a great pub. Just on the other side of the Himley Road, to Brick Kiln Lane where the epicentre of the earthquake in 2002 was.
 
Hi Jean,

It's crooked because of the Glynne family mining on their land, which joined the Earl of Dudley's land. So due to the mine workings, over the years caused it to subside.

I believe that during the 2002 earthquake the pub shook terribly, but it didn't cause any damage. So it must be structurally sound ( I hope)
 
There isn't a pool table anymore,well I didn't see one. The room where the kids were rolling marbles is on the right as you go in,you have to push the door up to open it......large room at the rear where we ate. Food was lovely,expensive but well worth it.

I remember going there with my mate colin cave from weoley castle and being totally amazed, and walking uphill to the toilet with only a pint inside me circa 1962, I remember on the way there is a very narrow lane with a sharp bend and a low bridge we were on a triumph 21.

thanks for the lovely pics jayne..i first did that marley rolling trick nearly 40 years ago. in the very same room..blimey was it really that long ago...thanks everyone for your memories of this pub..it seems that quite a few of us have been there...dave...if ever you decide to take a trip over there again and you dont mind a passenger give me a yell....

A taste of the very tasty food...Fish and Chips,Warm Chicken Salad,Bread and butter pudding with a advocaat laced custard,warm chocolate tart with amaretto ice cream.

Now that does look good Jayne!. Phoned our friends today and they said they would love to visit it one day when we go over. I guess you will be going back?. Jean.
 
Yes Jean will be going back,been twice this year so far. It's ok for the kids too,small playground there which they enjoy as much as the quirky pub :)
 
I was last there around ten years ago, with a friend from Northumberland; he was utterly gob-smacked! We often used to stop-off at the Crooked House on our way back from Arley, in the fifties and sixties ... I never tired of the 'marble' trick!
Thank you for bringing back happy memories....and of Banks's Ale too!
 
looking at all the posts and everyones memories of the crooked house i was thinking it maybe a nice venue for a meet up next year...of course transport would have to be arranged and as my son has contacts in the coach travel business i dont see a problem with that....just an idea to ponder on folks...:):)

The Crooked House was almost destroyed by fire in the early 1990s, and had to be restored to its higgledy piggledy glory. I went before and after the fire - it was rather more 'basic' before.A get together there would be great - I'll have to make sure get back to the Midlands on one of my visits. It's not hard to find, it's on the road between Dudley and Wombourne, although it's set well back from the road down a track which may well have been smartened up since I was last there.

Are you sure it was the 1990s? Certainly it was "restored" from a rather rough & ready (but relatively genuine) state earlier than that. Not sure exactly when , but I visited it several times in the late 60s-esrly 70s , and when I revisited it 1979-1981, it had been done -up, commercialised , and the frankly the effect of coins running uphill etc seemed to be lessened
 
Yes - some time around then - one of my library clients was the architect in Wolverhampton who got the job of doing the refurb for the brewery, so it would have been some time between around 88 and 92 I guess. I know I'd been there for a drink a matter of months before the fire. I've just done some googling and can find no mention - strange!! When I've got some time I'll try the Express and Star archives. But I'm absolutely positive!!
