Originally called the King Edward Inn when it was first built - if you look just under the dome and above the clock on the tower it is still there to see.

and next door to it was the west midlands press association
members club and years later when they moved out it was part of the new buildinf job centre for years before they moved again
best wishes astonion;;;;;

How right you are Astonian - indeed, the 'upstairs' of the Ben Johnson was part of the Press Club - I worked right next door for several years in Aston Cross telephone exchange, above the Job centre.
:)

A new mobile photo of ex The Ben Jonson / King Edward Inn with some of the new student blocks behind. Seen from Aston University. Such as Staniforth House and Bagot Street. Google Maps is now showing the roads as part of the Aston Expressway, including the Lancaster Flyover!

thanks ell...from what i remember of it in the early 70s it was nice inside

As far as I'm aware it's been empty for years! Could get turned into student accommodation? Student city around there!

yes its been closed a few years i think ell and yes again i think its a good bet that it wont re open as a pub:(

Hi
I have been photographing the KE Inn for my calendar and note that it has an alternative name - the Ben Jo(h)nson. I wonder why??? Although the King Edward has its name in brick, did the pub ever carry the other name? And..... I know that Ben's name is spelt with and without the "H", which name did it carry.

Started working at Midland Counties Ice Cream in 1073 and used to frequent the Ben Johnson most nights. Always remember playing cards on a Friday night straight after being paid. I also remember there was a darts team formed in 1974 as competition to the Turks Head just down the road. Great memories…. Tony Harris….

I spent many an afternoon and evening in the Ben, it was our meeting place for Villa games. Such a pity that pubs like this are closed or pulled down completely in the case of the nearby Turks Head.
