Spamfighter

Charlie

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
I'm getting an awful lot of SPAM emails, and I'm going away for a few days - I just KNOW my Inbox will be packed full of this rubbish when I get back!
Obviously, I delete them without reading, but is it worth downloading Spamfighter? Would this get rid of the bl**dy things?

Charlie, I started to get a lot of spam last year and wondered why. Looking back it started when I did the competition on line, the one that is on good morning, and also one off loose women. I thought I will have a go as it is free online instead of paying a phone call (which I wouldn't do anyway). That is when I started to get all sorts especially about Viagra ect. I just had to keep putting block sender on each time one came, it took a while but they went eventually. Hope you can get a quicker solution :crying::crying::crying:

Thanks for that link Alf. I was going for the free one, of course (tight wad) but I'm even more unsure about installing it now! I just don't know what else to do. Patty: I don't enter competitions online, but probably get targeted with every click onto Google! I've blocked loads and loads of them, but Outlook Express let 'em through anyway (the sender's names are so strange and they probably change them regularly). I use Mozilla Firefox, have AVG, Comodo, SuperAntispyware and CC cleaner. Can I download a shotgun?

A lot of folk who swear by Spam Fighter but I tried it and wasn't impressed. In your circumstances, Charlie, because I believe it has to be "trained" to recognise the particular Spam you're getting, while it might help in the long term, it's not likely to be much use short term.
p.s. Why doesn't it surprise me to learn Patty watches Loose Wimmin
?

Charlie when you said that you were going to go for for the 'free one' with your problem of Spam, did you mean the AVG? One of my friends has got full protection with Norton, which isn't a cheap option, but he still gets dozens of these span every day. I'm sure he would like a solution. I get the odd one since having 'e' cards at Christmas, but nothing to serious as yet.

Maggs: No, I have the free AVG - I meant the Spamfighter. Gone off the idea of that now, having read the reports (thanks Alf). Last time I was away for four days I came back to 141 emails, two thirds of which were spam, luncheon meat or just porky pies!

Charlie,
How about a free version of Mailwasher? It traps all your incoming mail so you can decide which to delete and which to allow through by reading it before it downloads onto you 'puter.

There were some good replies about this Spam problem. I agree with you, that none of them seemed to resolve the nuisance did they? I have been lucky so far. Do you think it is a case of being careful about parting with our email addresses is there more to it than that? What I don't like about forwarding attachments is that there seems no way of hiding ones own email address or that of friends who send them.

maggs, stopping spam is as difficult as stopping junk mail coming through your letterbox. You are correct in being careful about where your email address is sent to. While attachments are a much used way of spreading viruses I don't think they contribute that much to spam. I believe one of the most common ways of attracting spam is responding to those daft circulars and jokes. They carry a wealth of information and addresses that are forwarded to who knows who all over the world.

....So, if you don't forward this reply on to ten friends in the next five seconds your nose will drop off.

There is no logic to spam - for me 'BT Internet' traps most that come my way and Firebird traps some of the few that get through. I have another web based email address that is the same as my main one other than the provider and that one is totally free of spam.

You could alter your email client settings to only allow through mail from those in your address book Charlie; that should sort it. Bit restrictive but good for while you are away.

thanks Oisin, I have had attachments that say the sort of thing you quoted, but some of them are for cancer sufferers and do say pass this on. So, is it best to ignore any of these pleas do you think?

maggs, Yes! That's how they catch you. What good would forwarding an email do for a cancer victim?

Thanks Oisin, I will watch them in future then. There an awful lot of them, and well meaning people send them on. What a shame eh?

I agree - I do forward a lot of 'funnies' on to friends, but never those that tell you to "forward to 7 people and something amazing will happen" coz I don't trust 'em. Think I'll "allow only those in address book", that seems like a good idea Bernie. Thanks for all the advice, I'm obviously not the only one suffering, and YES it is a shame about the charity ones, but when you think about it logically Maggs.......................

Yes Charlie, I shall be more aware from now on. As I said I must have been lucky so far. Those 'send on' things are no more than chain letter's then aren't they? Such a shame.

If you must send the funnies on I suggest you copy and paste the relevant text, omitting all the listed addresses etc, into a fresh email rather that just clicking "Forward".

Personally, I don't bother sending them and never accept e-cards, which are another way of attracting spam, viruses and Trojans.

Yes Paul, I learnt my lesson 3yrs ago when I had my laptop, I wanted to try everything and put Incredible Mail on, I'll say no more

I used to use IncrediMail, I liked the cartoons etc., got rid of it when I realised how much space it used up, I also suspected it was a Spam target!
I always use a fresh email to send funnies, and always erase the previous senders/recipients. Some of the ones I get look as though they've been sent to everyone on the planet! Can't seem to do much about the Spam in Outlook Express, so I'll just put the mails I want to keep in a folder and delete all the garbage when I come back off me hols. Hey Ho.
