Spam emails

Every day I get spam from Ariana (no I dont want to be your friend); Online Casino (no I dont want to gamble on line) and the last one (no I dont want to enlarge my *****). I block them but they still arrive the following day. Is there anyway I can block them completely. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Carol.

Once you start to get spam email there is very little you can do to stop it. If you block one address they start sending from a different address. Also spammers sell on email addresses to other people so once you are on their lists you are likely to get more and more.

I have won the lottery on several occasions, and had numerousbank accounts suspended, however on a more serious note, spam mail is a realproblem.

It can be quite difficult to filter some spam mail out withthe junk filter, as the spammers just create new email addresses each day, thensent out spam by the millions.

A couple of things you can do is, try not to give out your emailaddress to freely, on line surveys which promise entry into a prize draw are infact data gathering exercises.

If you flag an email as spam, make sure you flag the domainname, this will then stop other variants of the same domain name. If you receivea phishing email form a well known domain name, like hotmail or Google, reportit as a phishing email to the domain, they can close the account down.

I am sure our other members will have more suggestions tocontribute too.

AOL has an excellent system which works pretty well. It can be set for the inbox to receive only mail from senders who are in your address book, anything else being directed to the spam folder. It is much easier to glance through the spam folder and add the addresses of senders you know which have gone into the spam folder, rather than have to filter out loads of junk from your inbox. After a while these become fewer and fewer – I now get 1 or 2 per week. I don’t know if other Mail Clients have a similar system but I guess they probably have.

I find the filter in BTYahoo works very well for me.

Most of the major email service providers have some kind of spam filter now. Some may not have them switched on by default - see the settings on your account - some may get lost if you use and email client. Most of them will miss some of the spam and you will need to mark it as such to deal with it. There are still spam filtering programs out there so there must still be some need for them. If you're using an email client rather than an online account you might want to take a look at some. I haven't used one in years so I can't say what's still good. Try https://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=spam%20filter&rpp=10&searchtype=downloads&filter=licenseName%3D%22Free%22%7Cplatform%3DWindows%2CMac%2CiOS%2CAndroid%2CWebware%2CMobile&filterName=licenseName%3DFree%7Cplatform%3DWindows%2CMac%2CiOS%2CAndroid%2CWebware%2CMobile for a list and look at the reviews and descriptions (despite the search terms some of these aren't spam filters) before you consider using any.

I have a couple of gmail (googlemail) accounts and it is very good at filtering out spam. I have never had to set anything up, gmail just automatically puts it in the spam folder. One or two get through now and again but I just press the "spam" button and it puts the email in the spam folder, and any more mail from the same address goes straight into the spam folder. I just check the spam folder every now and again to check no proper mail has gone in there. Spam mail is deleted after 30 days.

I have used Hotmail since I first bought a computer, because the acount has been taken over and is awful now, I started to use an email account I have through my Broadband ISP. I haven't had one bit of spam, there isn't even a spam folder. It used to be Tiscali which was taken over by Talk Talk, well done to them.

As far as I know Microsoft have always owned hotmail. They change layouts every so often but it's still them. The new name change is to the name of their usual email client.
When you open a new email account, you'll have a period where you get no spam at all. That's because nobody has your email address. If you're careful about who you give the address to, then you won't get a lot of spam anyway. If that email address should appear on the internet, you'll find that you'll get a lot more.

Despite getting between 20-30 mails a day I get very little spam, I use the spam filter on my Virgin sever which stops most of them getting through, I do regularly check this folder on the server to ensure no genuine mails have been trapped by this filter, and it usually stops about 400 a month.
There is a difference between spam or un-solicited e-mails and advertising e-mails from company's you may have contacted or dealt with in the past and given them your e-mail address, always remember to tick the no e-mail box where possible to prevent receiving such mails, if anything gets past then I just add them to my blocked sender list.

I have tried many things all suggested, but I dont know how you would flag an email as spam, as its already in my junk folder. I have 4 again this morning in my junk folder. I know they arent doing any harm, but it drives me crazy.

If the mails are ending up in your junk folder then the systems doing it's job right, just ignore them and delete them from there.

Different email providers/clients call spam different things. Some of them call it junk and have a junk rather than a spam folder. If you find spam in your inbox (rather than the spam/junk folder) the usual method to deal with it is either :-
If you've got the inbox open and an item of spam in it right-click and choose spam/junk from the menu.
If you've got the email open choose junk/spam from the menu bar.

If you've got spam in your spam/junk folder, you don't have to do anything.

I notice I received an email about a topic on the forum sent on Sunday morning May 24. It was to the email address I use on the forum and the return path for the email was admin...birminghamhistory...co..uk. The sender claimed to be a forum member but I cannot find the forum name in the members list. The sender also sent their email address. I have several email addresses which all forward to the iCloud where I actually read them. I only respond on the forum via posts or via the forum message system. The email has therefore been marked as spam.

ps the email discussed in detail items in a street pic

Admin@ is the email address the forum uses to send emails from its not a member.

Thanks Warren
Regarding my post#16 above, I had another look yesterday at the message from the 'non existent' member and show it below with all links that were in it deactivated to avoid anyone clicking on them. It looks almost authentic and referred to an image I had copied into a forum post here.

This is what I received

I joined to put a comment & date the pic but its on site but not with photo, Here it is
I have joined this site as i owe to you & oldMohawk for posting the only known photo of the American Fresh Meat company, As the Meat Trade Historian on FLICKR with 1500 pics & 3 Million hits i thought i would never see one,
The A F M Co was started by John Bell a Glaswegian & later his sons who became Sir John & Henry,
They were importing live cattle from New York to Liverpool & later with the advent of freezer ships carcase,s from Mr Timothy Courser Eastman of the plains of Wyoming.
There was resistance to this so called inferior meat so Eastman told Bell to open retail shops to the number of 333 called the A F M co, In 1889 the Company of Eastmans was formed taking in the New York abattoir & storage & the Uk shops & cold stores with Eastman & the Bells on the board, Although by 1900 Eastman went back to New York & the Bell brothers done other things, The Company was headed by Lord Greville & Mr Thompson MD, Eastmans built up to 1700 shops by 1914 but closed 500 due to lack of men & meat, Sold to Vestey in 1923
(Dewhurst). So the answer to oldMohawk query is the photo was before 1889 as after that it was Eastmans Ltd.

Very strange it looked almost genuine particularly the text about an online form.

Warren, he's listed as "User Awaiting email Confirmation" would that explain why his name doesn't appear on members list.

Thanks for the info Colin, I have just looked at post#4550 and notice the member's name appears on my laptop with a different shade of blue to normal and although he has a profile he is not in the member's list. Post#4550 looks genuine but all the extras in the email alert put me off. I don't respond if they are not on the list. Must admit I was really looking at the Bull Ring and just happened to notice the advert. Perhaps it is a just a simple computer glitch.

ps. If he is a genuine member I will respond in the 'old street pics' thread with a quote from his post.

Hi Colin - On the subject of members I looked at Currently Active Users last night and I know why 'jennyann' and 'mikegee' names appear in a different colour but 'GroverLaro' and 'mereEviva' in a different colour ? I could read the profile of one but definitely not the other.

I normally receive 4 or 5 spam emails a day (AOL mail). Over the last couple of weeks however this has increased to 20 - 30, about half being about bitcoins. Then a couple of days ago I had an email from AOL about their new system for minimising the number of spam emails by removing all my details from offending websites. This would be free for the first month.......... :(

I have two email addresses. One is my BT address, the other is a web based. My web based address was hacked once and so everyone in my contact list received a spam email sent from the hacker. I realised that if I deleted all my contacts then there would not be anyone to send spam to through that address. I never give my BT address to any individual or company that I do not trust, I only give my web based address so any spam (and I rarely get any) would only go to my web based address.

I have received the odd email from Netflix (my subscription is due) but I know I have never had a subscription with Netflix so I just delete anything I am not expecting. It's a bit like spam telephone calls, we seem to get two or three each day but as we have a phone that has a directory we never answer calls unless they are from someone in the directory. If it is important then they will leave a message, rarely do they though. I am often asked how these companies get our phone number, well the answer is a computer generated programme that just whizzes through random telephone numbers, dialling as it goes. What could be easier than having a programme that dials any 0121 783 etc etc number, then onto the next code? If someone answers, they hit the jackpot, same with mobile numbers. so if you are fortunate to have a phone which shows the callers number and you don't recognise it, then don't answer. if you do then whoever is calling knows that your number is a genuine used number and will just keep on calling. With emails, if you don't recognise the sender do not even open them. Spam emails can often be the carriers of a virus and just by opening them means that you open the virus.

Sue,

As I run my own website, I have my own domain - that address only goes to people I trust.
My reserve address is a gmail one.
I used to have an old hotmail address, which is now dead. If sending jokes to friends, I send to myself at that dead address and then blind copies to all the recipients. Of course, my copy bounces back and I promptly delete it, but it keeps my main address fairly clear of dross.

[/QUOTE Magic. our Maurice.. i used to pay £10 a year for my co.uk email.now i stick with my 2 gmail accounts.
one is for rubbish. and the other is for confidential stuff.

Since 3rd June I've only had 6 spam emails and 5 of them are emails from a website which had an unresponsive 'unsubscribe button' so I marked their emails as spam and they automatically go to the Spam folder where they are auto deleted after 30 days.

Other Spam (if any) appears to be blocked and I never see anything. So maybe I have a 'shortage' of Spam ... :grinning:

You'll probably get more now. The "unresponsive" unsubscribe button may be assigned to just confirm your email address. It would then add the address to a list which would be used for another run of spam or, probably, worse. The best thing to do if you get spam from a source you don't recognise is mark it as spam or (if it seems odd) phishing.
