  • HI folks the server that hosts the site completely died including the Hdd's and backups.
    Luckily i create an offsite backup once a week! this has now been restored so we have lost a few days posts.
    im still fixing things at the moment so bear with me and im still working on all images 90% are fine the others im working on now
    we are now using a backup solution

Mike thanks, just had a quick look and there are quite a few on one of my ancestors Abel Taylor, its going to cost me to have a look at them all.

speaking of cost to look ;may i suggest to people with a book i think i have prviusly mentioned and hat is of carl chinns book
called brum and the brummies bookand the reason i have mentionioned it is because there was alot of peple and members always asking about dear old emily
street and dymoke stret of its early years befor they built theflats in theperiod of 1930 with the orininal street and other peoles memories of the street and the area
the picture is an orinional one pre 1930 and i am sure some peoplewould like to se it
but unless some one down loadsit on to our forum they would have to buy carl chinns book to see and read and recall may be there old shop keepers stories and tales of the area ; thats why i used the expression of havinto pay for it ; go out and buy the book its a real gem of a book ;

Thanks for the information Mike. I have now found even more information on my 2 x gt.grandmother's brother, James Mackain, who was a Gun Finisher, but was also a Vocalist and seems to have been very busy in the late 1840's/1850's performing at concerts in the area - particularly at Holders Concert Hall in Coleshill Street, and the Theatre Royal, amongst others.

I have found some more info today in the archives on my grandfather Isaac Timmins who was awarded a Certificate from the Royal Humane Society for saving a man from drowning in the canal at Tifford in 1892.

Alan, Isaac was a boatman, I remember my mom telling me he used to bring his horse sometimes 'up the entry' to see them .
 
The British Newspaper Archive has just added the Birmingham Post for 1939. Presumably this is the beginning of addition of more recent issues, which previously stopped at 1919.
 
I should perhaps emphasise that those listed in the above post are new additions. The total number of issues of the Birmingham Journal in the archive for various years are:
1830-29 233

I would recommend the Newspaper Archives to anyone who has an ongoing interest in history and local history from say 1850-1950. (Where the most number of pages are concentrated.) When I first took out a subscription there were just less than 2m pages on the Archive, and now there are over 15m and increasing.

I have found many things in the Archives which are contrary to the "established" versions. For example one of the most pleasing has been to find that the 410 million year old "Coseley Spider" did not actually come from Coseley. The story can be seen below, and one remarkable thing, as seen in the comments, was that one of the creators of the CT scan actually contacted the Blogg.

There have been a few odd issues of Birmingham papers added to the newspaper archive from various years. In particular should be noted the ones of the Birmingham Post, where it is not always obvious that certain years are not complete, and so there may be items in there that have unknowingly been missed in a search The years are listed below:

Though am not sure if we will find much about Birmingham in the latter, as both "Jewellery quarter " and "Balsall heath" got no results, and "moseley" only one concerning the moseley dramatic art circle competing against Shrewsbury

The archive have just added the years 1969 and 1970 to their online collection from the Birmingham Post
