  • HI folks the server that hosts the site completely died including the Hdd's and backups.
    Luckily i create an offsite backup once a week! this has now been restored so we have lost a few days posts.
    im still fixing things at the moment so bear with me and im still working on all images 90% are fine the others im working on now
    we are now using a backup solution

I remember when going to Grans with my Sister she always asked if we wanted a pinch and I always did.

Also after the War Dad & Granda took it.:)
 
Hi Alf, my memories of snuff are when we lived at witton rd we had as you would call today a conservatory built,The chappy who built it took snuff and myself and my brother used to collect his discarded snuff tins. I cant remember his name but he was totally bald and i can remeber he said his hair fell out when he lost his wife
 
used to work at a firm called Singleton and Cole, main office Essex St. They were cigarette wholesalers also sold fancy goods. Had a snuff factory in New Canel St. top end not the Dogs home end. Sent snuff to many ex-pats in U.S.A. and a couple in Australia. Did you know you could get snuff coloured handkerchiefs, also different flavours of snuff including Lavender for the ladies.

SNUFF night at The Boot Sutton Coldfield

On Friday nights some years ago (we selected few) friends, would take snuff all kinds, most came from a shop in the city which specialised in snuff and tobacco, we also tried to out-do each other by bringing along something that no-one else had ever tried or tasted, GREAT FUN.

I really miss those Friday nights
 
On my desk, alongside my keyboard, I have a round metal tin with the label Hedges L260 Snuff - white background, black lettering. I keep paper clips and drawing pins in it now.

Underneath the logo, it says Hedges L260 Snuff Ltd, Birmingham, England.

My grandfather took snuff and I expect it was a tin he bought, so that would put it 1940-1950 or even earlier.

So, with Singleton & Cole, it would seem that there were two snuff companies in Birmingham.
 
One of my grannies took snuff, my mother was horrified when she came with us to the pictures and sniffed away. :Aah:

Alfie do you remember Turf cigarettes, I so wanted my dad to smoke them because the cards were of Film Stars.
 
My uncle took snuff and his nostrils were permanently brown (brown nosing?)
It was better than the stuff they sniff up their noses these days anyway!:Aah:
 
Di yes the Turf but they didn't have real cards they were printed on the insert of the packet and you had to cut them out.:)

My grandparents had a newsagents in Church Lane..any body remember the Coates's...this was around the 1930-40s...and they sold snuff l was always facinated how in was weighed out on the scales, l know they would be knocked up many a night by a customer who could'nt sleep unless they had a bag of snuff under their pillow but i'm sure most of it went up their nose...l remember as a child we knew this lady out of Telford Street who use snuff and of course being kids we were always curious so one day she had us line up put some menthol snuff on the back of our hands and told us to take a good sniff all at once....WELL you can imagine what happened our noses burned our eyes watered up not to mention how lightheaded we all got and l'm sure a few tears were shed too....but it cured us at least it cured me...never again. I/ve mentioned this before I think , my Cousin Victor Biddle worked for and later took over ownership of Sanders Chemists in Potters Hill They packed snuff on the premises and marketed it in tins as 'Sanders Snuff'. E.

My gran was a snuff taker(?). When we spent time with her we were often sent to the local shops to buy a packet of singleton's snuff. When she could afford it she would have Hedges L 260 .

As this was a tobacco product, was the Hedges brand anything to do with Benson & Hedges the cigarette maker?

Benson & Hedges was founded in London in 1873 by Richard Benson and William Hedges as Benson and Hedges Ltd. Alfred Paget Hedges succeeded his father in the business in 1885, the same year which Richard Benson left the business. The 1900s saw branches of Benson & Hedges Ltd. opening in the United States and Canada. In 1928, the American branch became independent, and was bought by Philip Morris in 1958. Benson & Hedges Ltd in the UK was acquired by the Gallaher Group in 1955.[2]
Apparently the snuff brand is still sold, though no mention is made of Benson & Hedges. So The snuff was invented by William Ross Hedges, andBenson & Hedges was stated partly by a William Hedges, but it is not certain that the two Williams are the same person .
Certainly , from the advert, in 1979 Hedges seem to have been a different company.

ok i am now locking this thread indefinately ..i have now sent 2 members who have complained to me via a private message the reason why a video showing a man sniffing/snorting snuff was deleted...harmless enough some may think but we have a duty to look at the bigger picture

school children use this history forum and we cant be seen to condone or encourage sniffing of any sort especially in graphic detail....if any members have any further complaints about about the moderators decision please send a private message to POSTIE who is the owner of the forum
