SIXPENNY HOSPITAL FUND

hi did ayone have any male relatives at tyn y coed 1946.this home was used for convalescing soldiers then.

Hello there ,I can remember about that time, my mother was taking a bucket of boiling water out of the copper into the dolly tub and slipped and she
scolded all down her leg,she was in a right state, and finished up at a place called Barnsley Hall hospital, I cant remember where it was though,
Worcester way I think somewhere, Bye Bernard67Arnold

Thank you, Postie. What interesting emotions it must have evoked for men who travelled up that drive in the hope of rest during illness.

The convalesent home at Kewstoke was for some time women only. However, there was a place for men,in Weston-super-mare.Around the corner from the Kewstoke home is a pub, "The New Inn"and at 10pm.there used to be a call to get the paitients back to the home.

Just caught up with this thread and Barnsley Hall hospital was on the outskirts of Bromsgrove Bernard, just off the Stourbridge Road. There is a housing estate on the site now with one or two of the old buildings used as Council offices.

Cant remember a sixpenny fund, I know there was the Hospital Saturday Fund, and at the Post
Office we had the Post Office and Civil Service Benevolent Fund, which is now Benenden Healthcare
I am still a member of that.Dont want to sound a !Olddie" but many people can not remember life
in this country without the NHS, What if you still had to pay sixpence to see your Doctor??
Why people want to interfere with it I will never know! Bernard

My husband pays into the BHSF through his salary.

It can be used to get a percentage off the price of spectacles and dental treatment and payments for such things as having to spend a night in hospital.

These days however the contributions are pounds rather than pence.

For anyone interested in the history of the Hospital Saturday fund the following link is to a pamphlet written by Sampson Gamgee, the originator of the fund, 10 years after its inauguration. It can be read or downloaded using several formats

So its still in existance then?. I used to pay into it in the mid 60s, most workers did then.
It was a helpfull fund in those days if you had to spend time in hospital.
