Hi all- I would like to find out a bit about the life of Sir James Smith- first Lord Mayor of B’ham. Can anyone point me in the right internet based direction please? Thank you

Interesting question as there doesn’t seem to be much mention of the first Lord Mayor of Birmingham on the Forum. Here is a start...

Title of Lord Mayor was granted on 3 June 1896, and the first was Sir James Smith. Born 1847 and Died 26 April 1932 at Edgbaston Hall. A retired bedstead Manufacturer and director of Barclays Bank. Out of limelight for 18 years.

Born 1847 in Leeds, and came to Birmingham when 3 months old.

There are numerous mentions of Sir James Smith in the Newspapers, available in the British Newspaper Archive.
Available online, but a subscription needed.
