Silvermere Secondary Modern

Roy Polard ,Alan. Some teacher names, Mrs Bell maths, Mr Brettle maths and PE, Mrs Brettle english , Mr Gregory Dep Head, Mr Evans geography, Mr Redgrave english, Miss Lacy drama, Mr Knight art, Miss Trumper PE and Mr Bennet metal work.

Did Roy Pollard run a TV shop opposite "The Good Companions"? I knew his brothers, Alan, who for a while played for Villa and Tony.

The Silvermere Pollard was Kenneth if i remember rightly.

I'm not sure whether he was related to the TV shop Pollard.

Roy pollard had 2 shops, the one you mentioned and one on Old Load Lane. Both shops closed suddenly about 15 ? years ago. The one in Old load has remained empty and to let ever since with the name Pollard still above the shop.

Technical drawing Mr Seazell, also ran the senior football team, and Geography Mr evans ran the intermediates.

Maybe we should start a new thread for Mapledene Junior and Infants School

and post your photos there.

Just found my school report in the loft in amazing condition. Seem to remember you had a half term exam session without class positions and then term end placed you in your class with the option of progressing from a "B" class up to an "A" class also the other way. Class sizes read from 40 - 45 from 1961 to 1964. Seems really large by todays standards. Parents had to sign the page but I know some characters who forged their parents signatures simply by getting a mate to sign every time needed.
Trying to upload a photo but no link..!

Remember Mr Evans as a fiery Welshman handy with the cane. Mrs Brettle always wore full makeup and had a very pointed bra that impressed all the lads.

Memory not that good any more. But I remember John brewer. Derek webb. Stephen Hughes.?????? Polard. Gordon grovener rings a bell but I can't place him. Do you know any of these. I know neville Philpott but can't remember if he was in my class.
Kenny Pollard , Gordon Grovenor and John Brewer played for the Silvermere football team

Does anyone remember the student teacher, we knew him as Eddie, took a group of lads in school uniform down to the local pub
for a farewell drink when he left. Can't recall his surname.

I do remember some other teachers, Mr Mead, Mr Cullen, Mr Morris, Mr Galloway/Garraway?, Mr Rees, Mr Walling, Mr Gupta.

Are you by any chance Charlie Hayfields sister. He was in my class 1961 - 1964..???
Hello Raymond Homer - Yes I am Charlie Hayfields sister. Unfortunately he passed away 9 years ago from bone cancer - He enjoyed a full and wondeful life before that living here in Australia, where I have lived for the past 40 years. Sorry I haven't replied up to now as I have not been on this website for some time. If you would like more information or just want to keep in touch please don't hesitate.

Hi - I am writing on my wife's forum here - My wife Barbara Owen would have been known to a few of you reading this as Barbara Hayfield (Charlie Hayfields sister). It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to tell you that Barbara passed away on Friday 03 August 2018 following a long long battle with ill health. She leaves behind her husband Ron (Me) and three daughters. RIP

Ron
I am very sorry to hear this. You have the sympathy of myself and the other members of the forum, and we are very grateful for you informing us of this sad event.
R.I.P.

Ron,

I never knew of Silvermere's existence, being from a different part of Brum, and was just reading this thread for the first time and seeing more names come out of the woodwork as it were. I was therefore saddened to hear of Barbara's death on this page. My sincere condolences to you and your family. R.I.P. Barbara.

Maurice

Sorry to hear of your sad loss and having just come across this thread, the loss of Barbara's brother Charlie a few years ago. Although I didn't attend Silvermere I did meet Barbara a couple of times and I knew Charlie and spent time in his company quite frequently. A lovely guy who, if my memory is correct, was a talented amateur boxer when I knew him.
My condolences to you.

As I said in my previous post I've just come across this thread. Interesting to see the photographs of the school football team. I didn't go to Silvermere but lived in the area and grew up and socialised with most of the people mentioned. Louis Ryan, David Grey, Keith and Alan Gough, David and Robert Scoular, Paul Lacrouts, Freddie Dixon are just a few of the names I remember. For a few years I worked with Paul and Sid Hart. Those photos brought back a lot of happy memories of growing up and living in Sheldon.

Liked the photo. I still have two or three class photos. Can't remember if they were silvermere or mapledean.
