In Shakespeare Road, Ladywood, they certainly knew how to arrange a super street party to mark the coronation of King George VI on 12 May 1937. The flags and decorations are out and everyone ready to enjoy the fun. Four years later most of them had to get used to spending nights in air raid shelters.

This Phyllis Nicklin photo shows the road in 1968. Although most of the houses and shops are boarded up prior to demolition, one resident is hanging in there. That house interior looks well kept. Must have been soul destroying living in an abandoned street whilst trying to keep your own house in good order.
