Have just been reading a review of a new book on the war in Burma, its sounds really good. In March 1944
the war in Burma entered its third year and the Japanese attempted a knock-out blow against the British
and Indian armies.Operation U-Go was designed to destroy the British divisions on the plain at Imphal
near the Burma/India border possibly as a prelude to a march on Delhi. The Japanese came up against an entirely new
Anglo/Indian army, trained and disciplined by General William(Bill) Slim. The auther who has reported on
many war zones for the BBC has produced a first rate account of an epic of endurance on both sides that
deserves a wide audience. The preview was by Frank McLynn. Bernard
