Reuben Heaton Ltd

Eton Sun

proper brummie kid
Hello all. This is my very first post on the site and I hope it will be a fruitfull one. I have been researching the company Reuben Heaton since I aquired the business some 16yrs ago and would appreciate any information on the Heaton family and or the company from any time during its history as I am trying to put together a reference book of sorts

The company started in 1857 and is still going. We have been involved in fishing tackle since the beginning and continue in this line as well as making fishing scales.

I need information on the family (I can't find a link to the Birmingham Mint Heaton's but its all the same dynasty with Heaton an Dugard etc), and any pictures or info on the earlier addresses of the company in Gt Hampton Row and Upper Hospital Street.

I will endevour to help anyone with general questions on the fishing tackle companies in and around Birmingham as this is a specialist area of mine if you have any. A general history of the company upto the present day is viewable on the web site if you need it.

Many thanks in advance

Thanks for those, I will contrast this info with the references that I have to see if any of them improve the clarity of the goings on at this time.

The most important time re my research of Reuben Heaton's history, is between 1857 when the company was supposedly founded and around 1880 when I can pick up some threads from catalogue evidence. This time is also interesting as Reuben spends some time listed as a brass founder and not a tackle maker.

I would dearly love to establish the connection between the Mint brothers and Reuben's dad John Heaton. I originaly thought he was one of the five brothers that includes Ralph Heaton of Birmingham Mint fame, but I'm not sure now due to date differences with one of the books published on the Mint's history. Do we know if anyone has done any research on the Mint Heaton's family itself ?, the mint history book only has a token reference to the family tree which I think is a bit vague.

A decent map of the area aston including Gt Hampton Row, Hospital street and the Mint locations around Bath street and Shadwell street is hard to find around the 1850 - 1880 period too. I suppose this might be in the library and that a trip into B'ham is in order.

I would be greatfull for any leads on the above

two very good maps recently released by Cassini Historical maps
Birmignham 1831 / 1835 £6.99
Birmingham 1919 / 1921 £6.99
and also onother good buy are The Godrey Editions several Birmingham maps in these issues early 1900's about £2 each depending where you buy.
I am sure some one will come up with some think else regarding location maps for the areas you are interested in

have you seen the photographs of the works in New Street Aston circa 1916 on page's 70 & 71 four in total Title of book Aston and Perry Barr by Maria Twist, she works for Birmingham Central Library, she might be able to help you out with information she helped me out when I was doing my family history.
I had my book from W H Smiths in Birmingham. £9.99

I think these may be the same as some pictures I was given years ago, but not sure. I am not familiar with the name but I will contact her forthwith via the library.

I will update you on my progress. Thanks again

Whilst about the task of starting the book, I have a few surnames to chase. If anyone has a reelmaker in their histroy from the mid to late 1800's, especialy with the following surnames I would be most interested to hear from you.

Albert Smith
Humphrey Wall
William Dingley
John Coggins
Robert Shore
John Rodgers
William Heath
Mary Haywood
William Ryder
Samuel Buckingham
And I am trying to trace a James Heminsley Heaton

This project is becoming bigger than ever, especialy now I have recieved information on a conection with the Heaton's of the Birmingham Mint. So if anyone knows of a business connection between the two as well, I wiuold be gratefull.

Thanks in anticipation

For what it's worth

There is an Anne Heaton-Ward who is a descendant from Ralph Heaton Birmingham Mint who lives in Sutton Coldfield.

Might get an address from the phone book.

Back in the fold once again. I have satrted the book now and began translating all my notes and research. I need some help with surnames though. Any info on fishing reel makers that worked for Heaton's in the late 1800's between 1870 and 1900 named Haywood, Shore, Dingley, Coggins, Harding, Ashmore, Buckingham and Westwick.

Also associated companies including William Henry Ryder, and Smith and Wall, and an offshoot of the Heaton's involved with fishing reels James Hemminsley Heaton.

All early Heaton's involved in the tackle company were brass casters and candelstick makers.
