Postal look ups Jacob Winter tailor ELECTORAL ROLL

Dear Gang,

I am trying to verify the addresses of Jacob Winter, Tailor who lived in birmingham from 1902-1946.
He became a naturalised citizen in 1910 and hence could vote.
I have a broad idea where he stayed- addresses are 51 Vere Street 1908-1913 and 1914-1917 -204 Gooch street.
I have other addresses-56 bristol Street and 43 Charlotte street. Would love if someone could verify from the electoral roll the dates and places of residence,
Cheers,
gareth

From Kellys
1903 No listing for J.Winter (66 Digbeth was Harry Goodman, tailor)
1904-5 Winter, Jacob, tailor, 66 Digbetn
1908 Winter Jacob, tailor, 87 Latimer street
(51 Vere st was listed as Louis Putzman, tailor, but data for Kellys would have been collected late 1907-early 1908, so he could still have been there in that year.)
1910-1913 Winter Jack , tailor 51 Vere St
1915 another tailor is at 51 Vere St, and there is no J. Winter listed in Kellys.
1921 Winter Jacob, tailor, 56 Bristol street. He is the only listing for that address.
1932 Winter Jacob, tailor, 56 Bristol st. (T N Midland 6452) & 531 Bristol rd. Bournbrook, Selly Oak & 1497 Pershore rd. Stirchley. T N King's Norton 1236
1933 Winter Jacob, tailor, 531 Bristol rd. Bournbrook, Selly Oak
& 1497 Pershore rd. Stirchley
1936-1940 Winters, tailors, 531 Bristol rd. Bournbrook, Selly Oak ; & (office) 117 Summer rd. Edgbaston 15. Calthorpe 1104
1943-46 Winter's, tailors, 531 Bristol rd 29

There were some other winters Tailors in the later years, presumably sons, but have omitted these, as presumably you know about them.

I’m afraid the old no 56 Bristol st building has gone ( I had hoped it might still be standing, but was approximately where the corner of Bromsgrove St now is, corner having been changed since then), but position is shown in red on the c1912 map below .

Here’s what I found: I take it the Jacob in 1939-40 is someone different. Csn’t see a Louis, unless the L in “H & L” is Louis
(There is also an Emily Winters, tailor, Claude Winters, tailor and Warner Winters, tailor. from Sparkhill, but they definitely have an S on their names)
1921 Winter Joseph, tailor, 3 Cattell road
1932-3 Winter, B. (Mrs.), tailor, 192 High st. Aston
1936 Winter Jsph. tailor, 192 High st. Aston 6
1936-40 Winter Jsph. W. tailor, 475 Coventry rd
1939-40 Winter Jacob, tailor, 38 John Bright st
1936-55 Winter Harry, tailor, 1227 Pershore rd. Stirchley
1956 -73 Winter Harry (Tailors) Ltd. 1227 Pershore rd 30. Kings Norton 1263
1955-56 Winter H. & L. tailor's, 52A, Edgbaston rd 12. Calthorpe 2037
1962 Winter H. & L . tailors, 37 Thorp st 5. Midland 1089

And carrying on with the original firm after 1946:
1949-50 Winter's, tailors, 531 Bristol rd 29
1955-56 Winter's, tailors, 531 Bristol rd 29 (Selly Oak 2506) & 77 Cape hill 40
1962-3 Winters (Bournbrook) Ltd. Tailors 531 Bristol rd 29 & 77 Cape hill
1963-73 Winters (Bournbrook) Ltd. Tailors 531 Bristol rd 29

There are no Kellys after 1973

I'm sure that Louis Putsman (z dropped) could have been the son!! had a tailor's shop on the corner of Milk Street and Digbeth up until the late 50's, really old fashioned shop with the clothes hanging outside on display, he used to stand on the front door step with his tape measure around his neck in classic tailor stance looking for custom.

The building is still there, preserved, has anyone got a photo? It would have been next to the Lincoln Street Motors Showroom.

I was always told that he was connnected with the well known Putsman firm of Solicitors in Birmingham, possibly the father.

Whilst were talking about tailors in Digbeth there was another well known jewish tailor named Isreal (Issy) Bassovitch who had a shop at 77, Digbeth up until the late 50's, my father went to him for 'bespoke' tailoring and I used to pop into his shop occasionally to see him and have a chat, I was always impressed with how he used his old fashioned steam iron on the cloth to press it, lots of steam and noise.

A lovely man with a classic heavy eastern european accent as you would expect from a jewish tailor who I remember fondly to this day.

He also had a son who became a Solicitor, it appeared to be the way the fathers saw the way forward for their son's, John Bassovitch became John Basset LLB and had offices in Corporation Street, Birmingham, he married Elizabeth Fine in 1962, but died very early with a heart attack in the early 70's.

Happy memories of Digbeth, living in Rea Street and going to St Michael's School, Floodgate Street.

Doea anybody know if Louis and Harry Putsman are connected.
Louis was the tailor above and Harry Putsman lived at 137 St Lukes Road from the 1921-1939
Regards,
Gareth
