Although I left Balsall Heath at two and a half, my parents and elder
brothers were always talking about him, my brother Ray was always singing "Vote, vote, vote for Percy Shurmer whos that knocking on the door" He was held in very high esteem by the people in that area, we moved out to Yardley Wood in 1933, otherwise no doubt I would have been one of his sparrows because poor we certainly were! The likes of
Percy were few and far between and became local heros.
Thank goodness there are folk left who remember people like him and
recording it , otherwise an important part of Birminghams history would
be gone for ever!
