1881 census shows Sarah Lorton b1852, Widow, in the workhouse - pauper.
In the same census, I found William Henry Lorton b1874 and Harry Lorton b1875, in Marston Green Cottage Homes.

I am trying to find if these boys are Sarah's children, where can I start looking?

Hi there, you could always try sending for the birth certificates. There is a couple of possible matches on BMD
Name:William Henry Lorton

Name:Harry Lorton
Year of Registration:1875 Quarter of Registration:Jan-Feb-Mar District:Birmingham (1837-1924) County:Warwickshire
Volume:6d Page:220

There is a marriage of a Henry Lorton to Sarah Harper
18th July 1868, All Saints
Henry died in 1876 age 37
This couple fitting the ages were living in All saints area of Birmingham with daughter Lucy in index cleary Lizzie on original age 1 in 1871.
Also Henrys sister Ann age 41.
In 1881 there is an Elizabeth Lorton b. 1870 Hanley staffs in a Girls home in Liverpool
There is no birth for an Elizabeth Lorton or in fact any Lorton in Hanley Staffs or thereabout in the years surrounding 1870.
There are 2 births in 1869 Birmingham

Lizzie Dec 1869 6d 206.

Didnt Wetern Rd Workhouse end up as a home for retired 'Gentlemen of the road' ? ie, what we used to call vagrants or tramps ?

While this link may not answer your question it may give you come insight into the conditons / workings of the two places you mentioned.

If you scroll down the pages you will come to Marston Green Cottage Homes which seem to be a foster home so it may be possible that Sarah was in the workhouse infirmary and the children were fostered for a while.

I have e-mailed the web owner Peter Higginbotham before with a query and he was very helpful so you could either e-mail him with a question or search his website for info.

Thankyou all so much!
I'll try and work through this info now, and see if it links back to the rest of the family.
I do have a Henry (father) where I couldn't find any info, so this could be him!
Will let you know what I find............

I have put Henry, and his marriage to Sarah onto my ancestry file.
I've even put his sister Ann.
I've searched IGI and FreeBMD, and I can find NOTHING before 1871 on any of them!!
