  • HI folks the server that hosts the site completely died including the Hdd's and backups.
    Luckily i create an offsite backup once a week! this has now been restored so we have lost a few days posts.
    im still fixing things at the moment so bear with me and im still working on all images 90% are fine the others im working on now
    we are now using a backup solution

OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

Quick visit this afternoon, I have about 40 pictures which I would call walls - the photos were taken as locations for advert boards - my question are they of interest ? - This is 775 Bristol Road in 79, as you see, a wall, some have a bit of a view, some are a line of hoardings on a street, some have cars parked in front - I am happy to scan them if someone is going to look.
Just finished scanning Garages / petrol stations and the Rackhams end of Corporation Street. Let me know your thoughts edit .......

Silly me, i`ve only just realised you can zoom in to different parts of the photo, duh !

I think this is the side view and it seems to be where Sainsbury's now is.

My first mother-in-law worked for Lawrence Bros. They seem to have supplied everything. When they closed she bought up tons of items almost for pennies. We virtually kitted out our flat from Lawrences, all for silly prices. They must have closed in the 1970s, don’t think they were taken over by another company. Well if they were, there wouldn’t have been any stock left ! Viv.

Hello Steve, I think the shop on the right of the Arden Hotel is Wimpy's. I think they were the first to stay open all night back in the day. I had many a good cheese burger in there, I used to sit by that window are the memories thank you.

My Uncle died and left a host of pictures this was among them -worth sorting through him and his wife!!

Steve, if any of the "walls" contain photos of cars, johnfromstaffs will enlighten us with his knowledge, so yes please keep posting. They are very much appreciated

The cars standing in front of this wall are what “Motor Sport”, which was delivered every month to home, would have described as “grey porridge”. If anyone really wants a breakdown, please advise, or perhaps drive a car like these!

Given the choice, the Mini on the very right looks about the best.
 
Thought I would tidy up the bottom end of Corporation Street today all from 1971, this is a different view from previous of the construction of C & A, traffic on the road and on street parking, also note on the back right they are just finishing the building of the office block

here we have Lloyds Bank Corporation Street Branch, sorry all the straight lines look wrong and the waiting sign on a lean doesn't help, note the people upstairs looking out of the window and the newspaper Kiosk , love the ornamental doorway.

On the left, the rumps of a Hillman Hunter and a Triumph Vitesse leave the scene. A Mk1 Ford Capri with a bent bumper, a Bedford van based on the early Viva, and if the 1971 date of the photo is right, an almost new Jaguar XJ6, not only a new car, but a new design first seen in 1968. It was a beautiful car, unfortunately not always built as well as you would want, just another result of those troubled times.

We could have some fun with this picture. Have we ever seen anybody so suspicious looking on any of the thousand pictures on the forum as this guy. I fear that the woman and her daughter who look apprehensive are about to be taken hostage, luckily in that large bag she has............
