  • HI folks the server that hosts the site completely died including the Hdd's and backups.
    Luckily i create an offsite backup once a week! this has now been restored so we have lost a few days posts.
    im still fixing things at the moment so bear with me and im still working on all images 90% are fine the others im working on now
    we are now using a backup solution

Remember this shop well, as a 14 year old had a Saturday Job in the Butchers behind Photographer Pitt the Butchers, also Played School football just up the road on playing fields behind Hodge Hill Juniors. thanks for the photo, must admit first i have recognised from your series so far keep them coming
 
I have no idea where on the Pershore Road the photo in post #171 was taken. I have been (virtually) down the Pershore Road in Stirchley but many "corners" have been altered and although a lot of shops remain I haven't spotted this one.

I will double check the address on the back of the photo then;)
 
Great minds - I looked there but think the windows are wrong. Will look again later, having a break for a while .

No M.P.Smith in Kellys for relevant period. There is a Margaret sith , but she is at 33 Lee Road, which looks similar, but can't see label being that off
 
Bit of early 70s mapping attached showing the corner as it was - and google say still 5 double dashes across the junction with the main road?

Yes - remember now the wrong windows were somewhere else. Could be here but if course it is one corner which has changed.
As Mike says there does not appear to be an M P Smith in directories or phone books.
 
Done a bit more digging and think it might actually have an address of 2 Bewdley Road rather than Pershore Road. Found it listed as a grocers in one old directory.
 
Kellys 1967-72 show Edith charlotte Taylor at 2 Bewdley road 1973 edition has no entry.
Looked at Telephone directories and could not see M.P.Smith at that address
 
I tried phone books as well. If you look at the entry on the eroll for Edith Taylor there are always other names as well and I tried searching for them in the phone book but got nowhere.
 
It's numbered 2 Bewdley Road on the early 70s mapping - has the chamfered corner and narrow properties next door on the Pershore Road? I think the Bewdley Road street name has been removed, or fallen off, and only the old "cul-de-sac" cast sign remains attached?
 
111 Soho Road in 1975, showing the size of these buildings three storeys and many rooms deep. There is the bay window on the first floor side. Massive chimneys - all rooms had fires? Also like W Blockside and Dale Dry Cleaners - your traditional local shops

This is 309 Soho Road from 1975, rather run down and I assume redeveloped. Love the open in the attic, and the buildings running down Boulton Road, shame it is all covered in corrugated sheeting, note the shape of the roof down the side.309 Soho Road -75.jpg
 
On the other side of the road is 100 Walford Road again from 1974, we have a couple of nice old Fords in the side road , Escort and Cortina, The sweet shop has a bubble gum and novelty machine and the Betting shop , the electrical shop has a selection of batteries and torches for sale, seems to favour Exide, judging from the adverts100 Walford Road - 74.jpg
 
Finally for today 109 Soho Road in 1975, note the Review Bar above the shops with its side entrance, wonder who performed there, again see how tall and deep the buildings are, and the three sizes of window down the side. The old style lamppost and wonder why you need to have bars on the windows three storeys up!!, and of course the old Ford Transit.

1955 SOLD Nos 105,107 and 109 Soho Road, Three retail shops with club premises over.

What a great thread STEVEBHx. A couple of months ago I was going to post in the corner shop thread a memory of this building that used to be a shop. It's on the corner of Bordesley Green & Imperial Road. In the late 60s when I was working on the 53 & 54 buses, we used to stop at this shop to get our "billy cans" filled with tea. Hopefully, one day a photo will turn up showing it as a shop.

I am posting another image from Steve's thread of corner shops #13 as it joins this photo on the left the "ncy" belong to a travel agency. The shop shown above has gone and Boulton Road been widened.

In the streetview below the shop with scaffolding was the travel agency and the road where the car is turning is the site of the boarded up shop from above.
