I'm looking for some history on the music hall / entertainer scene in Birmingham around the end of WWI. Are there any local groups/ archives/ experts who you might recommend I get in touch with?
Any help much appreciated. Thank you!

Hi KatW,

And welcome to the Forum. One good site to start with is:- http://www.arthurlloyd.co.uk/AboutMusicHall.htm

The British Library Newspaper Archive at https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/ is free to search, but you can't look at anything without a subscription, but it is a good investment. As well as all the theatre reviews in the various newspapers, it also includes the two industry papers, The Era and The Stage.

I took over the Theatrical & Musical Deaths List many moons ago, and you can find that on my site here:-
https://mscrete.com/tdeaths1.htm - I still have about 2,000 deaths to add to this list, but it is time consuming, and I don't seem to have much of that commodity!

You can also find some of The Stage Year Books for some of the period you mention here:-

There used to be a UK Theatre Group on RootsWeb, but it hasn't seen any new postings for several years. The link is:-
https://mailinglists.rootsweb.com/listindexes/details?list_name=theatre-uk and it's free, but at least the archives should be searchable.

You specifically mention Birmingham, but, of course, most performers moved all over the place. If you are looking for a specific performer, try the Search box, top right corner of every page, as they may have been mentioned here before.

By all means shout if you are seeking help with a specific person.
