METRO BIRMINGHAM CITY CENTRE EXTENSION SET TO GET APPROVAL
February 2010
The extension of Midland Metro through Birmingham City Centre from the current Snow Hill terminus to New Street station is expected to be given £82 million of Government funding in the next few days. The DfT have been looking at the business plan for the extension since last October.
It is estimated that the extension would create up to 5,300 new jobs and boost the region’s economy bringing more parts of the City Centre within easy reach of commuters and businesses.
The extension will see trams run from Snow Hill station to New Street station via Bull Street and Corporation Street. It is expected the line will cost £127million with £82million coming from central Government and the remainder from Centro and other local agencies. The city centre extension will take care of £52 million whilst a further £52 million will be used on a fleet of 19 new longer trams, platform extensions and other infrastructure improvements.
It is believed the Government want to make the announcement before the forthcoming election.
