Merchants Service sailor

Ann Steiner

master brummie
I've found an ancestor whose occupation is listed as a "sailor -- Merchants Service" in 1872.

Does anyone know where I might find records pertaining to this line of work? I know it wouldn't be the same as a military type sailor enlisted in the Navy, but are there perhaps lists of rosters anywhere? Sort of like union records or something? Or would he have just been employed by a shipping company, as a worker on board a ship transporting goods from one port to another?

Could he have been a sailor working for The Hudson Bay Company or The East Indies Company?. Len.

Thank you Ted, Len, and Chocks2 -- your responses answer a question and gives me some places to check for any records or information.

Best,
Ann
