Lost Relative - Former Consultant - Help to Locate U/K House in Great Barr

Marc

knowlegable brummie
Hello fellow B.H.F members, it's been a while, but I could really do with some help here.

I'm trying to trace a lady's late Father, the identity of whom was not known until recently. (i.e no name of Father on birth certificate).

I have scant information to go on, other than the following:

The gentleman (Father) was of Asian descent and a consultant/ Physician at Hospitals in Birmingham and Derbyshire. (possibly Pediatrics)
He was possibly born around 1923.
He went by the name of Michael, however this is believed to be an adopted name as he was likely to be of Sikh ancestry.
He was a man, said to be of considerable wealth, who lived in a large semi-detached house with a huge rear garden in Great Barr.
At one point he had considered building a swimming pool in the rear garden but I do not know if this ever came to fruition.
The road was on an incline and on the corner of the said street, stood an off-licence. (I do not know if the off-licence stood alone, or if it was part of a row of other retail premises).

At present, I'm trying to identify possible houses or street locations in Great Barr where the house may have been.
I'm also undertaking research into his medical background but without a name, this is obviously difficult.

Would there have been many consultants of Asian descent working in the Birmingham health service during 1969/70 ?

If anyone can shed any light on possible contenders for the street location or any medical staffing resources etc, it would be most helpful.

In short, the person whom I'm trying to assist, grew up never knowing the identity of their Father until the above details were recently furnished by a relative.
I would love to identify this man and provide an answer to their lifelong question of, Who was may Father?

If alive today, he would have been around 96 years old, so possibly born around 1903.

He would have been born about 1925, I only mention this as some kind person may look in the incorrect records.

Some clarification needed. If born in 1903 he'd be 116, if 96 he'd be born around 1923. Which?

Yes, there would have been consultants and other hospital staff of Asian descent at the end of the 60s. Not many and possibly specialist.
Do you have a last name? If he was known as Michael, he may have used an anglicised first name.

Hi Wam, apologies, it was my mistake. He is believed to have been born around 1923 and I have now corrected the error in the OP.
I only have the first name of Michael, which as you say could well have been Anlgicised. I have searched ancestry but no joy whatsoever. I have located an address where my subject was born in 1969 but the B.C states Father not known. The address relates to Howard street in Derby, which makes sense as Michael was known to work at Derby hospital. Unfortunately the Ancestry.com electoral register only covers up to 1965 and when typing in just the address alone, I get no results.

I'll keep plodding on but it is a long shot.

It may be pure coincidence but there is a pediatrician named Michael working in Birmingham with a very common Asian surname and I did wonder at one point, if this could have been a relative, following in the family footsteps, but sadly I think this is just wishful thinking and clutching at straws on my part.

Back in the 50`s i had a Asian friend (Indian) i believe. His name was Michael & though it`s obviously not him you are looking for his dad might fit the bill? He had a posh Anglised name. If memory serves me right, they lived in Gravelly lane

If the lady was not married to the father and he was wealthy I am quite sure she would have seen that he was financially responsible for the child . Your friend could apply to the courts to see if (mothers name)was in receipt of maintainance payments for a child born *******(birthdate)

Thanks Smudger, every lead is a possibility, I'll start digging along Gravelly lane.

Hi Roberta, I see your reasoning but sadly due to an unfortunate event, the Mother cut off all contact with the Father and refused all forms of support. She also refused to provide any and all details about the subjects Father. It is only now, after the Mothers passing, that other family members are coming forward with the scant detail that they have. The most frustrating aspect though is the lack of a 100% reliable first name, Surname (or family name due to Asian Descent).

The most prominent recollection provided to date, was one family member visiting the large semi in Great Barr as a child and walking to the local corner shop (possibly an off-licenece) situated at the end of the road. He recalls going there to buy sweets when he visited, but this does make me question how many off-licences were open in the day time in 1968 or thereabouts.
It really is a needle in a haystack job, but my subject is desperate to try and find out more about the Father they were denied. The subject is now in their late 40's and this has been a lifelong question for them, which to date has sadly never been answered.

Would it be ok if I posted a separate thread simply asking if anyone can recall a corner shop off-licence in 1960's Great Barr?

Regards
Marc

I see no problem with that Marc , but refine your search to that, the off licence, do not duplicate any of the reasons on the new thread.Duplicate threads are not a good idea.Alberta
