how amazing mike no wonder we could not find edward on the 39 register...he was in india by the looks of it..i am sure nick will be delighted with the newspaper articles you have found

lyn

Hi Lyn. Yes I'm absolutely delighted to read those articles that Mike kindly found and posted. We know from the address given that this is the correct Edward Poyser and as suggested, would explain why he can't be found on the 1939! This is so awesome, even at 5.14 in the morning! :)

Thank you so kindly once again everyone for the information. I'm learning a lot about Edward and it also answers some questions too. As I said to Lyn, the newspaper clippings were of particular interest and fascination, as was the military medals roll sheet that Janice kindly posted. All I really need to discover now is what happened to Edward between October 1944 when the larger of the 2 newspaper cuttings were written until around 1946, if indeed that's possible at the moment.

As was said, why those 7 entries on the 1939 were blanked out when unless there was a very young child in 1939, they would now be dead, I can only agree that it must be an update issue, or lack of one. When I had a FMP sub some years ago, there was a link to request an entry be opened but that sadly appears to be missing in Ancestry but again, as I said earlier I think, without being able to see the name(s), how are you supposed to show/prove that they have died and getting that entry or entries opened? Chicken and egg isn't it?! :p

hi nick am i correct in saying that edward married 3 times..first to dilys 1944 then frances 1965 then ellen wildgoose who was your friends mom ?

lyn

Hi Lyn. Yes, Janice is correct - Edward was married twice as you rightly said but Edward's father, who we call Richard Alfred Poyser Jnr on account of *his* father *also* being called Richard Alfred Poyser, was the one who married Ellen Wildgoose. :) They married 8th May 1915.

Thanks to this wonderful forum and group of lovely people who have been helping and advising me of all this stuff, we now pretty much know what Edward was doing until 1944. Would love to be able to follow this through to 1946 or so but short of obtaining his army record, not sure if that's going to be possible or not but at least we've come a long way since I first posted my enquiry. :)

I'm going to go to that forces site ... I understand there's a next of kin form one can fill in to apply for service records. The Royal Warwickshire Regiment Museum, were asked to send information and the form but the chap there must have forgotten to include it with his letter but I feel sure it's available to download online ... anyway I digress. :)

Glad to help. Army records should be available - you can apply via a government site but it takes a while. My guess is that as he was a regular soldier he was still on active service until 1946. Royal Warwickshire regiment seem to have been sent back to India from Burma.
Please let us know if you find any more info. It is nice to hear the ending of stories when you have helped find part of the story.

Hi Janice. Yes I'm going to apply for his army records, although we're fully expecting them to be released anyway sometime next year but it's 'only' a £30 admin fee to pay so I've decided to go for it. :) Your logic seems pretty sound and alongside my own thoughts/opinions as well, especially as we know he served in India at some point alongside the Gurkhas, as I said earlier.

Of course I shall let you and the others know how this pans out. I wouldn't have got this far without you all I'm sure. :)

Reading the newspaper clippings Edward says theat he joined the army in 1937, so if that is correct then it is doubtful whether he would actually be one of those blanked out entries on the 1939 register.

Also he should be listed on the electoral rolls for 1945 and 1946, either with his wife or as an absent voter. Not available online I don't think but can be seen at the Library of Bham. Hopefully at a known address because if not then it's like searching for a needle in a haystack.

The 1945 rolls are online, and show Richard & Mary at 93 albert road in that year. A search showed no Edward Poyser in 1945. It has not been mentioned, and you may already be aware that the 1947 online rolls show an Edward Poyser with others at 9 Sandford Road in what is presumably a house converted into flats (see below:)

Hi Lyn

Thank you and I never say or think information is of no use until I've seen it. Please could you send the image to my email or attach it to a reply or alternatively let me have the link? I've still yet to find Edward on the 39 although as you'll see above, we've found his father and also possibly in a blanked out (x7) 39 entry.

Thanks, Nick

as promised nick here is the 39 register for dilys davies...just as an aside do you know when dilys died...

I hadn't notice before that it said he joined in 1937 (March) but that's good. You're right he can't, therefore, be one of those blanked on the 1939.

As for the electoral rolls, I don't think we've found him yet on those although the newspaper clippings do show he was still on active duty from 1941 for a while, however long that was. I'm now puzzled/curious what the secret specialist unit was he was 'working' for ... Sounds intriguing, doesn't it?! :p :D

Thank you Mike. I wonder if that's 'our' Edward, possibly having returned from service maybe? I think we'll only know that if/when his army records are released. I had intended to apply for them but having looked much deeper into that, it appears they only do postal applications and you can only pay by cheque or postal order. I mean come on MOD, get up to date with technology for God's sake!! :) So for now I'm not going to proceed. I don't know anyone these days who uses cheques and last time I used them, postal orders were disgustingly expensive so sod that for a game of soldiers, as the saying goes ... quite applicably in this case of course. :p :D :D

I wonder if you'd kindly let me know which area or district of Birmingham is this Sandford Road please? Just curious.

Are you sure that's correct? On the 1939 register her dob is 20 Aug 1917 and there's a death registered Jun 2002 Denbigh for a Dilys Mary Davies with that dob.

this is why i asked the question MWS...also i take it that dilys and edward divorced ??as on the 39 davies is crossed out replaced by poyser then thats crossed out and replaced by davies...
