Great photo Topsy. It looks rather like beads on a wire like a zig zag more obvious on the one between the two slates on the left.
 
Well spotted Wendy - I had assumed they were looking at something out of shot. My Grandchildren are fascinated that when I started in Infants I also used a slate with a slate 'pencil' or whatever it was called. Cannot for the life of me recall how we were taught Sums though.
 
No they don't believe I used a slate either, we used chalk. The first thing I was supposed to learn was to tie my tie and shoelaces, so mmu got me an elastic tie. Used to cheat at the laces, did one bow and tucked the other end in.
