Key Hill Memorial Crosses

Key Hill Brian

Proud Brummie
At our Open Day someone told me that they had previously been categorically informed that as Key Hill was a Non Conformist Cemetery - there were NO crosses within the cemetery!

Afterr I stopped laughing, wondering how people can visit so often and not see the wood for the trees or crosses for the memorials!

I though I would snap a few on todays tour and show you just some of the variety to be found

You may know of some elsewhere that are as pretty or interesting? or are just there!!!!

Two Crosses, Riivetted? Cross, Celtic Cross, Basic Cross, 3 Crosses

I was surprised when I heard that yesterday - I felt very sure that I had seen crosses in Key Hill so it is nice to see the proof and know they are definitely there! :)

i would say there are few crosses there bri and amazing just how many differnt designs there are..

thanks for showing us....

lyn

is this what you'd call Cross Referencing Brian ?? lol

it is an amazing collection, from the very plain to the extremely ornate and the workmanship in the ornate ones is awesome !!

Just wondering..In post #1 photo 3..there is a headstone for Hodgson....do you know if anyone has laid claim to it ? I did a bit of digging and found a tree which I believe it belongs to, so I have taken the liberty of messaging the tree owner to see if he/she would be interested in the details..
Also can you tell me what the symbol on the Dwarf Cross in post #3 means please. I saw a similar symbol on a family headstone in Ledbury and wondered what it meant..

Lynne :)

lindyloo - it is strange that you ask this question about the symbol on the dwarf cross - on Saturday one of the graves we found in Warstone Lane had something missing from it. Colin told me that it would probably have been a plaque with the old 3 letter symbol on it - I had not heard about this before so when I got home I looked for it and found this article
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christogram

I think you will find it is IHS intertwined.

Please note this is not meant as a religious post - just for information - forum members please do not post any religious comments or the thread will be closed. Thank you

Mahoosive Thanks pollypops :) that's brilliant !! Ive been wondering about it for years but never thought to ask before,..Brians photo prompted me (Thanks Brian :) )

On looking at my own photo I can clearly see the letters now ! Thanks again... :)

Cheers Pol,

As a child I always understood it was JHS - and was short for Jesus, On the website the first one looks like JHS, but I see that it is officially IHS.

Learnt something myself!

I have always liked Ri=ugged Crosses (like the Hymn), and some Celtic ones are very ornate and pretty but always look a bit ancient and mystical with the carvings on them.

It is suprising to see how many varities you get from a simple design of 2 straight lines!

Cross references... lol !!!
Great descriptions Brian !!

I noticed the symbol a couple of times as we walked round KH with you and kept thinking I must ask Brian about that...but I totally forgot because of all the interesting things you were telling us !! at least we both know now !!

Popped tghrough KH & WL tonight in passing - as you do!

Dodged around a few 30ft branches lying across paths and graves etc - no damage done to headstones - Most important!
Checked out WLjust to check they've got a few crosses as well - Don't want them getting cross over it!

I was in Key Hill Cem today Brian...where were you? Day off was it? :D:D
I think you'll need a flame thrower for all the leaves...or it'll take you til next Autumn to shift 'em!

Hi Charlie - I'm at the Pen Room Tuesday mornings - went via KH & WL at 10.00 - got back to KH 1.00 planted up 3 trays of plants left over from planting graves in Sect R yesterday by a someone whose grave we found a week or so ago!

Escaped about 2.30 for me lunch!

Looking forward to a couple of quiet days with me brrom once the winds have gone - it just blows em all back again!

Cheers Dave - ps saw your support of Lynn/Astoness along with others and totally agree - although thread is closed - long may Lyn remain posting!

We just missed each other then Bri., I was there about 2.30pm looking for my great grandad's vault (H7) as per my email to you. I had to step carefully, you never know what might be lurking under those leaves - ah, so that's where you were! And forget the broom, try and cadge a large leaf vacuum, there's plenty more to float down (the fat lady has yet to sing methinks).
I'll reply to your email to me shortly...but thanks for the offer re the temporary memorial in Warstone Lane.
