Jigsaw club

roger a

master brummie
hi all when i was a wee lad growing up in Saltley there was a club on the Alum Rock rd not far from the gate pub called The Jigsaw club just wondered if anyone knew why it was called the jigsaw club?or if anyone remembered it?
thank you. Roger

hi yes
it used to be the old picture house many years ago
and brendan joyce bought it
and it was his first night club venue then he bought the old church
on moseley rd and made that into to another one
both rough diamonds club the bar counters was always five feet high
so you could not see what you are getting straight from an enamel buckets
the old church was called the golden gloves and it was mainly
used for the irish commutity
the jig saw was a dance night club closed during the day and openend
on the evening 7 days a week where upon the gloves was also used during
the day
my old dutchess is related to brendon as she is a daughter to one of
the irish commutity well respected family whom i will not name
he had alot of good irish bands on at the jig saw
but it certainly was a rough diamond of a place
but it was always packed out
best wishes astonian ;;;

My husband remebers the club well. My friends husbans Colin Macarthy went every week. In the 70's.

Wasn't it an old picture house? certainly looked like it inside

Hi Keith yes Astonian mentions that it was a picture house in post no2.:)

I think the Jig Saw was in the old Saltley Picture Palace. It was a indoor market for quite a while before it became a club.

Here are a couple of photos, one of the entrance to the picture house, and the building to the right of the tram on the second photo is where they opened the Golden Gloves.

I used them both, and the best thing I can say about either is they did a good T bone steak at the Gloves.

hi phil
many thanks for the picsof the old gigie , and the gloves
and yes they did give you a nice t bone steak and the reason they done why
it tasted a nice steak the secret is to give it a lot of peppering to disguise any
stale meat it s the trick of the trade all joking aside brendon packed all those
gangers in every evening the gang masters used to drop them off
there every evening those lads did deserve a good steak to keep there
strengh up ,but even sunday lunch times the men used to bring there familys
to the gloves for a meal i went there regular with the inlaws
thanks again phil for the pics best wishes astonian ;;

I think this same club was where they used to have the Buffs. My next door neighbour used to go there for his Buffs meetings.

hi ian
yes thats right did you ever go inthe place it was always packed
with people all ages and it had a bit of a back room eating area
it was,nt posh by all means or you could get chicken in the basket
and share with your friends did you encounter the big tall bar
beer coming out of an enamel bucket asked for mild and you never seen what
you was getting because the bar counter was so high
and that was to stop the punters jumping over the bar
brendon certainly started to coin it in there then when he openend the gloves
then the garry owen thats where is down fall started letting the young yobs in
then the druggies and the yobs and drunks
the place was over run with bouncers ,big hard guys but the kids wanted to
take them on then the proper gangsters came in the heavy boys
and there was trouble guns a blazing
then it was forced to close down afew years on .
best wishes astonian ;;;;;
